“choose rooms carefully”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 March 2012

Myself and my fiance, and 2 friends stayed at this hotel during our trip to see Machu Picchu. This hotel was good for our purposes, and judging from what I`ve read, given the lack of nice, reasonably priced options in the area. This hotel is situated up a steep step of stairs, which truthfully are not as bad as some people make them out to be. When we arrived we were met by a friendly gentlemen at the reception desk who promptly checked us into to our rooms. We had booked the standard rooms. POOR CHOICE! The rooms are dark, and dingy, and the room I was in had no curtain over the bathroom window so anyone could look in if they wanted to - and given the area, this has probably happened. My fiance (and I) were less than please, but were going to make due. We however asked if they had any of the nicer upstairs rooms available which they did. We discussed with our friends and we decided to pay the $40 upgrade. Well worth the money! The upstairs rooms were bigger, and much brighter with cleaner bathrooms. The soundproofing in this place is horrendous as we could basically yell to our friends through the floor downstairs to communicate. Their room was slightly better than our lower level room, but still not great.
The restaurant is very good, and we enjoyed the cooking class, although we wish it had to of been a little more hands on. The breakfast was ok, and at least was open early for us to be able to make the early bus ride up to the ruins.
All in all, we enjoyed our experience here. I would give the nice rooms 4 stars, and the lower rooms 2 stars. Stay here only if you can get the nicer rooms!
Also - Aguas Calientes isn't as bad as many people make it out to be.

Room Tip: Choose the upgraded rooms!!!!! I cannot stress this enough

Well located, people are friendly.
You can walk from the station to the hotel and purchase your tickets for the bus and entrance to macchu picchu . The rooms were clean. The only con for the hotel is that it doesn't have TVs in the rooms.
But overall it was great.

We choose to stay at the RupaWasi looking for some confort and also the good service of the guide that they have indicated to us (again, on TripAdvisor). One day stay.

We choose the Suite 5 (highest one) and we cannot complain. You have to understand that for Aguas Calientes, the hotel is very good. It is now a 5 star hotel, but I guess that no one going to Machu Picchu is looking for that anyway.

The staff were very friendly with us.
We arrived and the room was not ready, but they promptly arranged space for our bags while we walked around the town for a while and got things ready to go by the time we got back. We had a night a pre meeting with our guide (for the hotel booked tour on the next day, and it was nice to know up front things which are not mentioned at the travel guides).
Thanks to Alain (guide) we were able to initiate our day earlier with his help to climb the Machu Picchu mountain.
He was spectacular Guide and we even got all emotional with the way and passion that he indicated everything around there to to us.

We also need to mention that as a guest of the hotel you will have the breakfast at the TREE HOUSE, which is a fancy restaurant with very good food ! And the package we had, we had included a Gourmet Dinner with the stay. Very good Food !

It is indeed very humid place, so we expected to have a hot and humid weather all around and it was not a problem.

If you are looking for a confortable place to stay, is indeed a very nice place to stay.

Been there April 2011.

First, I'd like to start by saying, we had pre-booked our standard room w/2queens, 2.5 months in advance, as we had for much of our 3 weeks in Peru, and were worn and weary when we arrived (backpacks in tow). After a long-steep climb up a dingy alley (riddled with dog feces), we see construction off to left right beside the restaurant. We see and smell fresh bread that sits on a rolling rack, exposed, right inside the area of construction (for cooling purposes, I suspect). We pass the restaurant which houses the Trip Advisor Award. A few more steps and we reach Rupa Wasi Hotel and were pleasantly surprised by its appearance. Cute reception (but no one in sight). We ring the bell and I take advantage of peering around corners, I see moss growing on rocks, exotic plants, sunlight dancing around, a very special place indeed. That is, until we are shown our room...

You see, based soley on TA reviews, we booked this hotel without hesitation. What we weren't told is that you should absolutely, without doubt, take an upgraded room or at very least, request to be high in the treehouse. We were given Room 2 or 3...(I cant remember which). This room is located right next to reception and is the main-floor bunky. It has a shared (tight) doorway with the upper floor. It is a small 10/11 x 10/11 room with 2 queen beds crammed into it. It is very dark and dingy and has a mouldy odour. The bedding is old and the room, although it appears clean, feels very unclean (like what-kind-of-bugs-are-going-to-crawl-on- you while-you-sleep, kinda feeling). We were immediately dissapointed. This was the one hotel we were most excited about (based on the reviews) and in the end, turned out to be the most dissappointing experience of our entire vacation. My travelling companion weaves through the beds to check out the bathroom and sees that there is still garbage in the can and the floor is dirty. The old window faces the stairs going up, so you can't even draw the curtain, let alone look outside. We are done, we agree we can't stay here. We go back to reception and ask politely to change rooms. No they say flatly, they say they are full. Then, when we say we can't possibly stay in that room, as it is dirty, he's goes to inspect it (like we are lying). After 5 minutes, he returns, and nastily tells us there is nothing they can do, "take it or leave it". We pack up and check in to Gringo Bills (a few streets away), a much larger facility and a much larger and cleaner room, with a TV, I might add.

Obviously, Rupa Wasi receives alot of business based on Trip Advisor reviews, hence the obnoxious attitude from them when we told them we couldn't stay. They did not care one iota and we were never offered our deposit back. At very least, if you do choose to stay here, request that your room is higher up the tree house, not near reception. Remember, pre-booking months in advance does not ensure a decent room.

Room Tip: Avoid Room 2-3!! Book an upgrade or get what you get. Ask for a higher room, not near reception.

This is a great little place. Quite rustic and pieced-together but in keeping with the surroundings. Very close to train station, village square and buses to Machu Picchu. Staff friendly and helpful within the limits of their English skills. LOTS of stairs to reach the hotel, but if you can't climb, what the heck are you doing in Machu Picchu?
