A trail from the eastern gate of the old city (medina) takes you up to the Spanish mosque, easily visible from all parts of the old city itself. Up on a hill it offers great views of Chefchaouen. I stayed a few nights in the city so was able to take advantage of early mornings to walk up and beat the crowds. At sunset the popular spot is usually quite busy, but this shouldn't stop you from going. It's popular for a reason. From the central medina it's probably a 20-25 minute walk. It's a dirt path but you don't need hiking boots.

We are early risers and often are awake before people get moving in Morocco. The Spanish Mosque was perfect for an early morning activity. Cool temperatures and just five other tourists joined us to watch the sun peek over the mountains behind the town to hit the slope across the valley and inch towards Chefchaouen. A great place to take panoramic shots and just prepare for another bustling day.

We hiked up to the Spanish mosque in the rain. It was cold but the view up there was totally worth it. I’m not the fittest person and have severe fear of heights/poor sense of balance but this was manageable to me. Took us quite a while to hike up to the top though (didn’t actually note down the time we took but it felt about 40mins). We merely followed the crowd from the Médina to the end of the shops at the top of the hill, and we hiked up the trail (easy to find) to the Spanish mosque. No steps present on most of the trail, just rock and soil. The mosque isn’t open and isn’t impressive from the exterior as well. Go for the birds eye view of Chaoen, you won’t regret it. It was the highlight of my trip.

It's worth walking up to the mosque to see the views. From the top you can see the whole Medina of Chefchaouen

This is an easy walk about slight to moderate inclines from the medina to the Spanish Mosque, from where you get the best view of the blue jewel Chefchaoen. We encountered many dogs and children along the walk, and all were friendly!

The view from the top is breathtaking, especially on our sunny February day where temperatures reached into the mid-60s. Well worth the effort and great to see a bit of nature outside of the Medina.
