“Pleasant trip spoiled by theft of iPhone when left in care of hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 November 2011

Charming spot - lovely beach. Food generally ok but prices are expensive. No wine was available when we were there - according to the staff, the hotel does not have a licence to sell alcohol and a recent raid left the hotel high and dry... Renovated rooms are clean and functional. Service was generally good, sometimes a little slow. An otherwise enjoyable trip was spolied when my wife's iPhone went "missing" whilst in the care of the hotel. Unfortunately the response from the hotel was unhelpful, as they were not willing to take any responsibility.

I love the convenience of a 1-hour flight and you are on a beautiful beach. This beach does not have the beautiful coral and Marine life that Tioman & Perhentian have right off the beach; you have to take a boat ride to snorkel here. The diving was okay but not GREAT. The water is gorgeous, the beach is heaven but they miss opportunities to earn money by providing "service". While lounging on the beach, you have to go to the bar to order drinks or snacks. They would have added to my bill if they had servers who came by my lounge chair periodically offering bottles of water and asking, "can I get you anything?" My only complaints here are the service, the prices for what you get and the boats anchored just on the other side of the buoy line... really spoiled the view. The rooms are nothing more than an ordinary hotel room but you pay luxury prices.

Room Tip: Opt for a villa, they are near the water and facilities... everything else is up a steep hill.

I visited in 2004 but wanted to leave a review. I visited with my Malaysian/Chinese husband, four year old child, and another couple. We stayed for four days and had a wonderful time. The island is remote and can be difficult to get to but the staff made it easy and clear what to do. Do not come here if you are in a rush to get anywhere because sometimes the planes or boats can be delayed.
The resort is beautiful and the food was excellent. The beach was beautiful and not packed full of tourists. We took a snorkeling trip with our four year old on a different part of the island. She hung on to our back and it was fun. We saw some barracudas! The staff made it fun and the Komodo dragon payed us a visit a few times.
The price was right up our alley. Not too expensive and not like a cheap vacation spot for teenagers. There were several people there having a return visit. I was the only American that had visited in a while but there were lots of European's.
The rooms were clean but saw a few ants as to be expected.
Will come again when in the area!

We spent a fabulous week at this resort. Nices divecenter and the water was very clean! We were maybe unlucky with the room, it was very noisy with the neighbours...Food is good but prices are expensive for the dinner, do not to go outside the resort it was not very good and clean. Service can be improve, do not compare with Thaïlande...

Room Tip: if you can take all inclusive beacause food is expensive!

When contacted hotel staff Ghazuar for help to getting there and to provide alternatives, none was given. Had to give up a paid flight booking and rebook a flight to accommodate their shuttle service.. In the end some unforeseen problem happened and couldn't make it there; when asked the hotel to help if there's is any way to postpone the trip to some other time and am willing to pay any difference since i ALREADY paid around 3,300MYR, all i got was copy and pasted terms and conditions from the same Ghazuar person. Sent a second email to ask for the superior's feedback and got no reply at all. Go spend your money elsewhere, everybody. Lack of professionalism and responsibility. Terrible.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
‘The Taaras’ is a bespoke Private Beach Residence, tucked away and hidden from the outside world on a small Island found just off the unspoilt East Coast of tropical Malaysia. Considered to be one of the most beautiful Island locations in the South China Sea, the Isle of Redang is home to our natural, yet stylish resort found on one of the most spectacular bays surrounded by one of the bluest oceans on earth. The resorts ethos is to provide a contemporary, barefoot luxury experience with warm Asian hospitality, remembered with a smile long into the future. The name of the property is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘TAARA’, meaning ‘Star or Apple of my eye’ as well as ‘Goddess of the Sea’ which are all represented and epitomised by our mermaid figurehead. The resort is managed by The Taaras Luxury Group, and was formerly known as Berjaya Redang Resort managed by Berjaya Hotels and Resorts. With the stylish suites and rooms, as well as a stunning five bedroom Private Villa perched high up on the cliff overlooking the ocean and resort below. The resort boasts commissioned furniture and bespoke photography of Redang Island and the landscapes of Malaysia. Each suite or room contains oversized beds and hand-picked linens and fabrics for your comfort. Most rooms and all suites have larger washrooms containing both bath tub and separate rain or monsoon shower (some with spa bathtubs looking out over the rainforest or the bay). Most residences have an outdoor balcony or verandah and our suites at the top of the cliff summit have spectacular views over the beach and ocean below. For clients who prefer or require further privacy ‘The Cliff Private Villa Bay & Sea View’, our private five bedroom residence perched high up on the cliff more than meets the requirements; private access, a Villa Host at your ‘beck and call’ as well as twenty four hour security; should it be a necessary requirement. The residence also enjoys a sixteen meter Infinity swimming pool, personal fitness room and both interior and exterior lounge. ... more   less
