My friend and I decided to spend a long weekend in Perhentian and because we wanted a little more than just quiet beaches, we decided to stay on Long Beach, Perhentian Kecil and boy, did we make the right decision.
The stretch of sandy white beach is perfect for a lot of things. You can spend your hours there either reading a book or two, sipping refreshing fruit shakes, snorkeling, floating around, swimming, diving, kayaking or just killing time. It's pretty much up to you, really.
Same goes in the evenings where you can socialise at the few bars along the beach, get wasted on monkey juice at the bar located in front of Panorama Chalets, watch the breathtaking starry sky, or walk across the cool sandy beach.
However, if you want to do something a little bit different, you can always spend a bit more by doing these:
1: Checking out the other beaches around the island, island taxis cost from rm10 onwards depending how the places are.
2. Going to Pulau Rawa.
3. Going to Pulau Redang for extra watery activities.
4. Do what we did i.e. go to Pulau Lang Tengah, a secluded island about 45 minutes from Perhentian Kecil. We paid MYR 80 per pax for the trip but the island was worth it. Emerald waters, great corals and friendly fishes to greet you. A bit of a warning though, the trip between the islands can be a bit of a pain if the water is not calm. I had the worst ride of my life when we headed back to Perhentian thanks to the waves. My back still aches up till now. *winces.
One more thing, if the food on the island is a bit too pricey for you, here's a tip: you can always make friends with the beach boys and then kindly ask them to bring local food from kuala besut. We had an excellent breakfast of top notch nasi dagang for MYR 2 a packet!
Conclusion: A trip that was definitely worth the money and energy!
