“Not fabulous, but not terrible either”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 May 2012

The whole resort has a bit-piece feel to it. It seems that rooms/blocks were added at different times. So to access our room on the first floor, we had to walk down a flight of stairs from the main building, along some outdoor walk ways and then upstairs to our room. This seemed to me to be rather poor design.

The pool bar was good and you could order a la carte from the main restaurant. A rather unpleasant aspect of the pool area was the rule that you could only have 3 towels per room and if you didn't return them, there'd be a financial penalty. Really? Is that necessary?

The resort claims to have views to, and beach front on, the South China Sea. In fact there was a patch of sand and then rocks between the Sea and the hotel. Sure you could see the sea but it wasn't magnificent by any stretch.

Food at the resort? The menu was limited, the food was just okay.

Room Tip: The 1600 block doesn't have afternoon sun, so the balconies are more usable than those in the ma...

Since my last posting in November 2011, I noticed a few improvements during my stay at the Miri Marriott this month.

The biggest improvement is their upgraded free internet access which has very much improved speed. They used to have only LAN connection but now have a very stable and high speed wifi access in the room. No more confining your usage to the desk.

The coffee house is undergoing upgrading and is closed during my stay there. They have a make shift banquet room as their coffee house which is okay considering it is a temporary location.

My room is the pool side chalet and it is hugh. Carpet is a bit worn out but clean. As usual, the best feature of Marriott is their bed and down feather pillows. Mosquitoe is still a problem so never leave the door open.

The staff are still one of the friendliest people I know and they always greet you and meet your request promptly. Sarawakians are nice and simple people so try to be understanding if you find somethings perplexing. One incident I had was trying to buy a slice of cake at the lobby cafe. They offer 50% off on the price of cakes from 8pm to 10pm and if you are there just before 10pm and decide on your order under a minute after 10pm, the discount is no longer available and you have to pay the full price. I did not have my cake and coffee that night but had a good laugh anyway. I wasn't hungry but just felt geedy because the cakes looked so tempting.

Overall the hotel is very pleasant and clean. The Miri Marriott is an old infrastructure and was the Rhigga Royal previously when I first arrived in Miri in 1988. Since Marriott took over the management, there had been a lot of improvement.

The best way to enjoy Miri is by renting a car which is readily available at the airport. Book in advance as they usually do not have one available on immediate notice. I uses Hertz as their insurance cover is very transparent and their rates are decnt at RM142 per day for a Hyundai Matrix.Road signs are in Malay but quite easily understood if you have a map and plan your routes well.

Lately there are a number of new spas in Miri. I like the "V Spa" as the rates are very reasonable at RM60 per hour for a aromatheraphy massage and RM 40 per hour for a foot massage. They have Thai and Indonesian massuers so you can choose the different types of masasage you prefer. Though they do not have the same ambience as the Madara Spa at the Marriott, the price are a third of what you pay at the Marriott. Decor at "V Spa" is pleasant and the towels, sheets and the place is clean and warm. The Spas in Miri are not Spa in the true sense but most are clean and decent joints.

The Miri Marriott is really good value for money. Certainly still the best hotel in Miri for now.

Overall a wonderful place for a family weekend retreat.

Pros: beautiful landscaping, good breakfast, cushy pillow, stroller accessibility and the gigantic swimming pool. kids love it!

Cons: being Marriott, relatively it was a slow check-in (looks like new staff handling it, so that was forgivable), temporary construction at the restaurant and nearby new hotel/apartment, and finally somehow unacceptable was mosquitos on the ground level. understandably the room is right just next to the garden. but that shouldnt be an excuse and it has to be managed. anyway the sunset and landscaping from the room view counterbalance the disappointment.

all in all they still deserve 4 star.

Room Tip: traveling with small kids shall prefer ground floor rooms and near to swimming pool at the centre as...

Our stay was simply wonderful! The hotel is within walking distance to the seafood restaurants (although we're taking our cars). Parking space is very convenient and with security. One other thing I love about this hotel is that it especially smells really really good, shall I say...very aromatherapic. Everywhere you go you can smell hint of essential oils. The staffs are very friendly and helpful. The swimming pool is great for family with young children where they have slides for kids. There are also pool challenge activity for kids where a big inflatable pool bouncer is being erected. But during our stay the bouncer's blower was broken so my kids missed the great activity.

I really did not have any expectations prior to arriving at the property.
I was pleasantly surprised by the lovely reception area, and the general calm feel of the place.
The staff were very accomodating and friendly.
I stayed 2 nights and had a wonderful time. The pool was great, the room was nice and big and had a wonderful view of the pool and the sea, the airconditioning (once we worked out how to use it!) was fine and all prices were very affordable and the food overall was not too bad for buffet food. I would definately go back again.
