“Sandakan - a flying visit”
Reviewed 25 April 2012

We visited Sandakan to see the Orangutans, probiscus monkeys and the War memorial park.
We saw all of the above in a day trip organised through the hotel and were very satisfied.
Our tour guide was excellent and very knowlegdable. One of the more interesting parts was the water villages around Sandakan - quite incredible.
The Sabah hotel was rated as 4-star and was excellent value for money - its facilities were very good and its location was ideal (just out of the busy commerce centre of Sandakan)

We stayed at the Sabah hotel on three separate nights between tours. We had pre booked direct with the hotel and got a very good deal with breakfast included in a superior room. Each time we checked in we were offered an upgrade to an executive room for 30 ringit. We took this up on the last day as we had just gotten back from Lankayan Island and were booking in at 9.00am and only executive rooms were ready to go. Turns out the only difference is a pool view so not really worth taking up otherwise.
The rooms in general were all dated and each had some problems. The first had a non functioning bathroom light but as we had arrived late-9.30pm -after a very hairy 7 hour ride from Danum Valley- we decided to just out up with it as we were off again in the morning. The second room had a non functioning fridge and we did have to report that as I carry refrigerated medication. It was no problem though, within 10 mins a new fridge arrived.
Despite the rooms looking generally worn they were all very clean and the pillows were the most comfortable I have slept on-honestly. Unfortunately the rather grey looking towels did not smell the best.
All the staff were very friendly and helpful as we found everywhere in Sabah. The porter in particular went out of his way to help on each occasion we stayed there.
The pool was good and popular with kids-nice to have a dip after hot days out.
We found breakfast to be plentiful and varied and there was no shortage of choice. We also had dinner one night-the B B Q buffet which for 48 ringit was cheap. We also had lunch one day which was also very good and cheap.
All in all we had no real complaints as we got a very good deal direct on line and for what we paid it was very good value. I do think though that the hotel will struggle unless it upgrades itself when the new 5* hotel opens in the near future.

Room Tip: Don't bother to book an executive room -they are exactly the same as the superior rooms except w...

One of the best hotel in Sadakan known as the Sabah Hotel, located just a short distance of 5 minutes away from town. Sabah Hotel is known to be the only hotel in Sandakan to have a swimming pool! The place is relaxing, quiet and with excellent service. I stayed in the Exective Parlour floor. The room is very spacious.

Room Tip: The room is very spacious.

I took a road trip from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan and stayed in the Jr. Suite at this hotel. The room as spacious and provided a huge king size bed. That said, it was pretty dated. The TV was small for the distance from the bed, which made it a bit hard to watch. The balcony had plenty of room and provided a nice view over the forest area. The hotel is located a bit out from the town centre, but honestly, it is not the best town centre in Sabah. The food in the restaurant is decent, and there is a nice pool downstairs.

Having arrived at hotel late afternoon I was told breakfast was not included and would have to pay another Rm 30 a night per person extra total of Rm 360 for 4 night stay for 3 of us this was later reduced down to Rm21 night when i complained that i was sure it was included.

I was sure the breakfast was included but was to hot and tired to argue about it at that point and just agreed, but later i found the receipt that said breakfast was included and they reluctantly agreed to provide free of charge after all the hassle over the breakfast it all seemed pointless the next morning when we went to breakfast half of the international dishes were empty and the choice was very limited leaving only a choice of various rice, noodle and Asian dishes to choose from i don't mind Asian food my wife is Asian so i eat quite a bit of it but the quality was pretty low to say the least.

When i asked if the international dishes were going to be refilled they said yes but we were in the restaurant for over 45 mins and nothing appeared the same thing happened the following day all bar one and that was because we arrived early the other days were there around 9:15 am and they finish breakfast at 10:30 so obviously nothing gets replenished after 9am.

when my friend complained to the desk about it he was told they know about it because other people had also complained about it in the past but the management had not done anything about it my friend was given a small basket of fruit to compensate don't know what the breakfast was like on the last morning i never even bothered to turn up just not worth it.

On a more positive note the room service, cleaning, pool and facilities were good and the lobby food & drink service was excellent with various fresh breads and a good choice of cakes and pastries but best of all was a young waitress called Lisa who was the most charming helpful young person you could want to meet.

Maybe the Hotel management should take a training course from young Lisa on how to deliver a good service.
