“Not as expected”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 November 2011

We stayed there in October 2011. It was ok, but did not met our high expectations for two reasons: 1. Tide effects with very low tide during daytime made it difficult to enjoy beach and water during the day at that time of the year. At arrival in the afternoon the coastal area appeared like moon surface. So the first impression which we got was quite strange 2. Building of a new resort right next to the resort brought noise to the resort. The new resort is very close to Bagus and will become quite big. Therefore it may give Bagus Retreat a hard time in the future because the exceptional atmosphere of the former jungle feeling of Bagus Retreat may suffer. We may not come back for that reason. Anish and Krishna did a wonderful job, but they could help for the issues mentioned above.

Friendly, laid back, ecofriendly, great hosts and great accomodation. Bagus is what I think of when I think tropical island getaway. We snorkelled with sea turtles and baby sharks right off the jetty. This is not a five star resort.....but a special getaway that will keep us coming back as often as we can.

My finance and I spent 4 nights at Bagus Place earlier this month. We wanted a relaxing retreat after traveling the country for a few weeks and we certainly found it! From the moment we booked (with the lovely Clare) the service was impeccable.
After the boat ride we were greeted with complimentary cocktails and a welcome talk and tour from Krishna and Anish (who are lovely!). We stayed in Big Chief, one of the biggest chalets in the retreat. We didn't really need all that space but it was pure luxury after spending weeks in hostels! The accommodation is comfortable, clean and has everything you need. I think some of the reviewers have come to Bagus expecting a 5 star resort with everything catered for, this is not what the retreat is about. As Krishna explained to us herself, they aim to provide something different. An affordable, friendly, relaxing experience that shows off the real Tioman in terms of food, landscape and hospitality.
My partner and I certainly feel they've achieved this. Highlights included the delicious meals! There was a surprisingly large menu for breakfast and lunch and dinner was a real highlight- every night fresh, delicious local dishes. I was a little apprehensive about the food as I'm not a huge fish lover but trust me this isn't a problem, at dinner there was always a meat dish to go alongside the fish and veggies options.
We were lucky enough to stay on a Saturday night where, weather permitting, a beautiful candlelit barbeque is held on the the beach complete with a bonfire! I would def recommend trying to factor in a Saturday night into your stay!
As for activities, we were pretty lazy! After a hectic few weeks my partner and I just wanted to relax which Bagus is made for! There's lots of little areas for lounging and catching some rays and you never feel on top of each other with the other guests. Yes the beach area isn't huge but it's big enough for the retreat. We loved the snorkeling, as complete beginners it was really easy to get stuck in and there was always someone around to help if we had any questions.
Little extras like the library, massage room and bar really make the retreat. But it's the people who have turned Bagus into a home away from home.
We loved every minute of our stay and can't wait to come back one day soon
Joanna and David x

After a bumpy start (the Bagus Boat broke down and we were stuck in the boat for 2 hours and then transferred in a tiny boat to Bagus), we arrived at this lovely retreat, which I will always remember. We stayed at the Boat house, which is really unique, but also has come into age (one window fell off, when we opened it and it stayed like this for one night...) and is a little bit dark inside. Also the stairs to the "deck" are quite steep and I would not recommend that for small kids or elderly. Sadly the beach is full of rocks, which made snorkelling quite nice, but I am a swimmer, therefore I was a bit disappointed. Anish, Krishna and Alfred were lovely hosts and interesting people! We wanted to make a snorkelling trip to ringis island, but it was the annual clan-up day of the divers which keeps sharks/turtles/fish away, so i was a bit sad, but took a great book and read all day, which was great too. The food is good, at our last evening we had the luck to have a bonfire/bbq at the beach and it was so lovely! But I must say for the price we paid I would have expected a little bit more (towels to be exchanged every day, soap, adapters etc.) but I guess you pay the price for not having all this :). Anyhow it was a nice stay and maybe we will come back one day! Keep up the great work, without you three Bagus would not be Bagus! Jimmy & Bianca

Room Tip: I loved the boat house, but I couldn't compare with other rooms. Its the closest to the Jetty.

My partner and I spent a week at Bagus Place in September. We had a great time and were quite sad to leave!

The one outstanding memory we both have is of the staff who were all exceptionally friendly and helpful. Anish and Krishna were always on hand with advice and tips and work very hard to deliver the experience we are all looking for when we book something like Bagus. The evening meals (buffet style) were always a highlight. Always fresh, tasty and original, this is something we will miss! Breakfast and lunch were somewhat basic but nevertheless acceptable and due to the 'cut off' nature of the retreat supplies are not always easily available. There is not a great deal to do in the area but then if it's action you're after then you shouldn't be here. It was great just to laze around, go for walks, read, relax, snorkel etc and be fed in between! There were some great little touches added by the staff to spice things up. The nightly ritual to the end of the jetty with the evening meal's remains to feed the fish was always fun. Watching the sharks feed on the fish was even more fun!

The chalets are basic but well equipped. We had Eagle View, the largest of the six, and we were very happy with all aspects. The maids are great and really go above and beyond. The gap where the wall doesn't quite meet the ceiling is a little disconcerting - I was half expecting to wake up one morning with a monkey next to me in bed! The wildlife in general is exceptional and one of the great memories of the place. However, neither of us saw a turtle in the whole week we were there which was unbelievable to the other guests who were seeing them daily!

There is a resort being built not far down the beach which, although had bothered some reviewers, did not bother us. How this resort will affect the overall experience of the Bagus visitor remains to be seen. I'm sure the owners are holding their breaths. Tioman is opening up to the world so these developments are to be expected.

Overall a great stay and very happy with everything. I suspect Bagus may not represent complete value for money which is the only less positive comment I would make. Some may agree, some may not. Don't be put off though, this is a very special place and would recommend it to anyone.
