My stay at Amera Villas was very quiet and relaxing. It's the perfect place for those who want to get away from everything and just relax somewhere peaceful without any distraction or disturbance. The villas have beautiful mountain views and are around a 10-15 minute drive to the nearest beach or restaurant area.
The Amera Villas are a group of 12 large, two story villas, in the mountains of north west Koh Samui, each with their own swimming pool and balcony overlooking the sea. There are another 12 or so villas behind, which are still not completed, but this caused no disruption. When I stayed in April, it looked like construction was halted. The cement frameworks were overgrown with trees and bushes. A little unsightly, yes, but no disruption to my mountain view thankfully.
The Villas are VERY secluded, up a VERY steep hill! Be aware that you need a good car to get you here safely. I would suggest hiring your own car (preferably a 4wd) to drive up and down the mountain as it takes around 10 minutes each way to drive. It costs at least 500 baht in a taxi one way. Also note that not many taxi drivers know the place or like driving up the hill. Be prepared with directions on a map! It’s not the type of place you leave multiple times a day and go back and forth to the beach and restaurants from, it’s best to just arrive and zone out!
Although it's nice that the villas are so far removed from the busy streets and beaches it also means that you should arrive with everything you need, it's quite tricky to pop out to the shops. When we arrived we were not prepared and turned up hungry and with limited options. The fridge in the villa is stocked with water, soft drinks, wine, beer and a selection of spirits (all of which you have to pay extra for). The kitchen is fully equipped with pots, pans, etc, but there is no food, available on the property.
Zai, the villa manager gave us a menu for a thai restaurant at the bottom of the mountain. For a fee, the villa staff will bring the takeaway food by motorbike. They can also take small grocery orders (for the next day), again for a fee. It was good to be able to have takeaway, but not for every meal, so I would suggest doing a big grocery shop yourselves before arrival.
The villa itself was spacious and bright. Our villa had two doubles and a twin room and could very comfortably accommodate 6. The rooms were large with cupboard space and the bathrooms were modern. The bath in the master bathroom was very nice. The furniture throughout the villa was nothing special, but it wasn't offensive either. There is air conditioning in each of the bedrooms, but downstairs in the kitchen and living room, only a fan. We found it stayed cooler inside if we closed all the blinds and doors. We had an issue with the linen when we arrived (it didn’t appear to be clean) but the villa manager quickly rectified this and arranged for new linen to be put on every bed and for an entire re-clean of the whole villa.
The villa had excellent wifi and a big TV with hundreds of the latest movies which was a nice surprise. The villa manager was also on whatsapp messenger almost 24 hours a day to help with anything we needed, like booking taxis, arranging laundry service and even bringing fresh flowers for my bath!
Overall it was a pleasant and relaxing stay at Amera Villas. I would recommend the villas to families or groups of friends who are happy with their own company and enjoy just chilling by the private pool, reading a book or taking in the views. There is not much to do at Amera Villas other than relax. And once you’ve made the perilous car journey there, you probably won’t want to make it too many times backwards and forwards!
Firstly - The Villa : In a word, fantastic. Villa was sparkling and the staff at our arrival were terrific, despite the 2 hour flight delay. We were there at the tail end of a long rainy season so didn't have the best weather, but all time spent in and around the villa was great. The location itself is breath taking - you could sit and soak up that view forever. Little things like the all the bedside lamps in working order and all switched on for our late evening returns creating a warm and welcoming ambiance and the new Cable TV set up easy to use and endless films/sports when needed, plus of course fast WiFi for the teenager who'd simply die without it - Perfect.
Second - Koh Samui : In 18 months the investment in the Island seems to have exploded. The Fishermans Village, our nearest port of call, has grown in a wonderful fashion. We tend to avoid the expensive European fare restaurants but they are plentiful and very high end. Also the local Thai establishments have really come on and in amongst it all you can still find lower key places with quality food. But its the endless development on the roads that is really pleasing to see. Drainage is being installed all over the island and some forward thinking industry alongside it which will ensure that the final works will sit pretty.
Third - The Staff (Sai) : Wonderful! SO professional and just lovely with it. She took care of us so well and knew EVERYTHING about the villas and whats going on, despite only being there 5 minutes. The car collection at the Airport was great and then the car hire the next morning was seamless and you just knew she wanted us to have a great time - I think she even started to berate herself one day when the rain fell for the best part of it - she's brilliant. When she said something would happen, it happened, she filled us with the utmost confidence.
Finally - The Road Up : When you consider you are on the side of a mountain then you expect the climb up to be a touch dramatic. And it is. That said, we were encouraged to hire a 4X4 which we never actually needed to drop into those lower gears but knwoing we had them if the rian was heavy was nice. You soon get used to the climb and it becomes another chance to admire the view, but I would strongly suggest avoiding those island bikes/mopeds and sticking to the comfort of 4 wheels.
In Short - We'll be back, soon.
