“Not a bad place at all”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 September 2011

We stayed here for 3 night in early September and enjoyed it. This is not the Ritz so don't expect top quality but it was clean and enjoyable. The staff is pleasant and helpful, the rooms were adequate and the pool is a nice way to cool off following and afternoon of site seeing in the nearby wats. You can rent bicycles and motor scooters from the hotel at fairly reasonable rates and there is a nearby Thai massage shop that has great massages for reasonable rates (no, not those kind of massages but rather traditional Thai massages).

The restaurant is OK but there are many places to eat that are more interesting and offer a greater diversity of food. I ate the breakfast at the guest house everyday and had no complaint but we went out each evening to a street market or a restaurant for local cuisine.

The air con rooms are a bit more expensive but even so they are a good value and you won't get stung here for a room. Overall impression is good and I would stay here again if I came through Ayutthaya on another trip.

Room Tip: The extra 50 baht for an air con room is worth it.

First of all; when you go to Ayutthaya, you can best take some addresses of guesthouses with you, because unlike in most Thai Cities, it's quite hard to find guesthouses in Ayutthaya. (That's why we ended up in Sherwood House..)

We're not very picky, had pleasant stays in several cheap guesthouses, but this is the only one we're absolutely not satisfied about. I'm really suprised to read so many nice reviews here, because when we were there, it wasn't good at all..

The room wasn't clean, neither was the shared bathroom. The provided towels had a sour smell, that was really disgusting (luckily we brought some clean towels ourselves). Really bad guesthouse, especially considering the fact that this guesthouse has western management (the owner is from the UK), so at least they should know something about western standards.

The rooms were horrible, but the food in the restaurant was nice though (not included, but reasonably priced) and the Thai staff was very friendly. There's also a pool (that at least looked clean, we didn't swim there) and the location is good, especially when you rent a bike. Really convenient; bike rental is available at Sherwood House, only 50 bath a day (but the bikes don't have lights, so it's not really recommendable to use them when it's dark, especially because of the Thai traffic).

It's not expensive (cheapest room is 290 bath a night). Event though there are many great gueshouses in Thailand that are cheap AND clean, in Sherwood House you get what you pay for; apparently that's a filthy room. If you think that's worth it, by all means, go there. If you prefer a clean (bath)room (and a towel that doesn't smell like a dead cat), you'd better try another place.

Sherwood has a pool and a decent farang menu, the rooms have beds with sheets and blankets, and towels are available. Communal bathrooms were far from the worst I've seen but also a goodly ways from clean. Staff was perfunctorily helpful without the warmth common to other parts of the country. Menu prices were 2-3X more expensive than cart prices, but the food was good and clean.
Bottom line: not a bad place to stay, but far from the best value for the baht.

The big selling point of this guesthouse is the pool. Where else can you stay and swim for less than 300 bhat? The pool was nice, a good size, and shielded from the sun. The staff we nice, the room was decent as was the restaurant. The guest house is close to a 7-11 and a huge food-fare with cheap and delicious food. The ruins are close and they rent out bicycles, the best and most fun way to see the ruins. The guesthouse also had free wifi, and the lack of Robinhood decorations was a relief. If you choose to stay here, locals and tuk tuk drivers know it as the MM swimming pool.

The only downside of this guesthouse is the noise. The house itself is quiet, but the street can be quite noisy and the windows don't close at all. Also, if you leave the curtains closed, no air gets in and the room can heat up. Still, we slept well despite the noise and light from open windows. Also, no private bathrooms, but what do you expect for 280 bhat?

We were looking for a good place beacause a daytrip is to much for us with a 2 and a 5 year old. All the reasonable priced hotels here got (very) bad comments. So we looked for something cheaper. We were surpised: the inn's location is excellent for visiting the old stuff: it's all arround the corner. Both;, the nightmarket and the monuments. With a bike you're everywhere in allmost 10 minutes. Pool is great, (also litterally), room is small and leaves a lot to be desired, but except for a private bathroom nothing essential. It's clean, staff is nice, price is low and food is ok. There is a foodcourt and a 7-11 around the corner.
And the location is excellent.

P.S. the bikes are lousy, but for a 10 minute ride it's ok.
