Owner description: A unique concept of bringing South India’s cultural traditions all under one roof, Dakshin Chitra is a little out of the city (25 kilometers) but certainly worth your while. Dakshin Chitra actually means "picture of the south" and that’s exactly what you should expect to see. Educational and fun at the same time, this is a center for a complete orientation to Southern India’s four states. You can experience the living traditions, performing arts, music, crafts and architecture on the 10-acre spread. The earthy feel of the structure and its surroundings transport visitors into the cultural milieu. Dakshin Chitra is great for both children and adults as you can try your hand at glass blowing, pottery and traditional games.

“Dakshina Chitra, - Houses of South India”
Reviewed 21 June 2009

For those who are culturally minded, there is another tourist attraction near Mahabalipuram. This place is called Dakshina Chitra. It is located around 50 kilometers south of Chennai which is the capital of Tamil Nadu. This is located on the beautiful East Coast Road which is also known as the ECR.
This place is for showcasing the different types of traditional houses of South India. Here there are many different types of houses which are actually moved from their original locations and relocated at this place. It is interesting to see the development of our culture, from the very basic thatched huts to the double storied mansions of more affluent persons, complete with a guest room and attached bathrooms! There are plenty of trees providing shade from the blazing sun as we roam from building to building. One thing lacking is that most of the information provided is in the form of boards. This is very basic information only and we are left to recreate the rest in our minds. This could prove very boring to persons who are not so well versed in our history.
A guide would definitely make it more entertaining and informative for tourists, especially for the foreigners. Snacks and ice creams are easily available within the complex, which help in keeping the interest and stamina of the kids alive. There is also a curio shop within the complex and one can pick up cheap knick knacks to take back home.
There is one restaurant in the complex which provides very tasty meals at a competitive price.
Access to the place is easy since there are many buses plying on that route. We can also use the Hop –On Hop – Off bus service provided by the Tamil Nadu Development Corporation, which is a very innovative idea. The buses run through the day on this route, and once you buy a ticket on the Air conditioned service, the same in valid throughout the day. You can get off at any destination, see the place and catch the next bus for the next destination all for Rs 250.00 a day.
