Owner description: A unique concept of bringing South India’s cultural traditions all under one roof, Dakshin Chitra is a little out of the city (25 kilometers) but certainly worth your while. Dakshin Chitra actually means "picture of the south" and that’s exactly what you should expect to see. Educational and fun at the same time, this is a center for a complete orientation to Southern India’s four states. You can experience the living traditions, performing arts, music, crafts and architecture on the 10-acre spread. The earthy feel of the structure and its surroundings transport visitors into the cultural milieu. Dakshin Chitra is great for both children and adults as you can try your hand at glass blowing, pottery and traditional games.

“Interesting exhibits and crafts; good cultural experience”
Reviewed 15 January 2012

We made a day trip from Chennai and it was well worth the traffic! There are some interesting exhibits e.g., leather puppets, folding books; traditional architecture from different southern Indian states; and artisans demonstrating basket weaving, pottery, etc. We are South Indian by origin, but still found it interesting. Highly recommended, especially for families with young children who might want to see aspects of traditional life that are slowly disappearing.

“Nice place depicting south Indian culture”
Reviewed 26 November 2011

The place is a man made one artificially but it depicts the culture of south Indian states like Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala & Karnataka.

Each state's culture is shown as different zones and it makes to you feel that you are in those traditional places.

Everything was made with care and you can really enjoy.

You also can have a good traditional food in incampus restaurant.

“Cultural center - very nicely done”
Reviewed 30 October 2011

As a westerner, Dakshina Chitra reminded me of a pioneer village. Only instead of having log cabins, frontier jails, country churches, and blacksmith shops, this place instead had grass huts, shrines to deities, weavers, potters, and exhibits on the importance of rainwater harvesting, to name only a few.

The exhibits were extremely well done, the presentations very informative, the costumed performers entertaining, and the entire place very comprehensive. A "modern day" ice cream cart provides treats for sale, and there was a great assortment of colorful craft items available for purchase as well. It was a delightful place that should be added to anyone's tour list.

I enjoyed it more than the famous shrines in the area because of the array of exhibits and the fact that a lot of interpretive information (such as signs and labels) were available. Allow about 2 hours for a visit - more for eating and shopping.

“Dakshin Chitra - an insight into art, craft & lifetsylte of south india + activity centre”
Reviewed 25 March 2011

We stayed for two nights at Dakshin Chitra in Jan2011 with our young kids. It is situated on the popular East Coast Road (ECR) on the outskirts of Chennai, next to MGM Dizee World. There is lots to do on ECR.

Dakshin Chitra has on display heritage houses from different states in South India. One can go inside and explore the lifestyle and even interact with the artisans whether they're weaving a kanchpuram saree, a basket, grinding wheat, blowing glass, pottery, etc. There're a lot of activities children and adults can engage in. Our kids spend hours at the activity centre painting paper mache, a palm leaf and engaging in origami. I couldn't resist either and picked up a kalam and tried my hand at a madhubani paiting. There were many activities and were not costly either - ranging from Rs.10-Rs 75-

From time to time folk dancers performed in the open area surrounding the activity centre. Some ethnic wall hangings, puppets, bangles & houseware was being sold by the artisans in a small bazaar. Besides which the centre also had a gift shop. There are also some famous painting on dispaly in one of the houses.

We paid Rs.1,100/day for an a/c room with a small fridge. The room was basic with a bed and desk and an attached bathroom. Although the fridge was unusable since there was some fungal growth in there. Also, food is only served at the restaurant (except for morning tea in the room) and there is no fixed menu. But the gentleman preparing the food is very engaging. There are a few good food options on ECR including a food court closeby & a Nilgiris supermarket.

You can even go in for a day visit - Fee Adult - Rs75, Child - Rs20-Rs30. Closed on tuesday.

Overall we enjoyed our stay. I would love for my kids to visit again once they're a little older. We loved the fact we were introduced to so many different lifestyles and were able to engage in many activities. Dakshin Chitra holds different workshops for children & adults and the schedule is uploaded on their website.

“More interesting than Pondicherry”
Reviewed 17 February 2011

A high quality heritage centre. It has a wonderful ambience, displaying a wide range of Southern India residential architecture. The centre provides a number of craft related activities to keep the kids occupied and it is all very educational. Extremely well maintained which is refreshing in contrast with other tourist attractions in the vicinity.
