“If its Kodaikanal, Its Carlton!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 May 2012

Its absolute monopoly with this place. The best of location, view, accessibility, food, activities. Right from the private Shikara boat ride, cycles, the in house activities, the club house, the bar, the restaurant, its all a perfect blend.
Of course the peak season price is something to be bothered about but then if you are the kind who like a no compromise holiday, then its only Carlton in Kodai. The market place, the lake, the feel of Kodai is all within 100 mtrs of this hotel. Rooms are pretty good with a nice view in any category of view you take.

This was pretty much the default place for 4 families which went to kodai in end-apr, beginning may. Great weather with cloudy mists rolling over the lake in the afternoon followed by a mild to heavy shower. Do consider rooms 107 onwards if you want a great view but are not concerned too much about privacy on the balcony.
Good to know that we could rent the hotels bicycles for free although they didn't have a tandem cycle. Plenty of activities for kids including table tennis, foosball, badminton, etc.
Service pretty much fine - not too many complaints unless you are in a group requiring a special diet (eg jain food) in which case beside to inform the executive chef well in advance else you could end up eating from a sparse menu vs everyone else enjoying a lavish spread!
Ask for Rabeendran to take you for sightseeing but avoid the crowded suicide point. Instead ask him to take you to the pillar rock view with a 10min walk inside the forest. Great guy!
Hotels bar was a bit too lax in serving us our food taking way too long (1hr for a plate of fries).

Certainly the best located hotel in kodai if you are looking at staying by the lake and want activities at walking distance. Nice rooms especially the lake facing ones on the front with huge individual balconies. Good food and good amount of activities (indoor as well as outdoor) to do. Service level was good as well. inspite of the proximity to the road, it is very peaceful once you are in the hotel premise.

Some point of concern though:

1. On the last day we were there, there was a conference in the Den. For some reason, after the conference they had a party out in the lawns with blaring music till 11p.m. or so, thereby causeing unnecessary disturbance to guests. I wish such parties are carried out at the Den itself or the badminton court so that others dont get disturbed. Alternately, music needs to shut by 9 or so for the benefit of families with children. Hotels with class should not give in to demands of corporates when respect for other guests get compromised.
2. The conditions of their cycles are poor. Over half were not in working condition when we were there.

The hotel is neat & clean. Service is good and food is nice. The deluxe room that we stayed in had a excellent lake view.
The hotel is situated in the most central area, so if you step out of your room you can hear a lot of horn and people shouting & having fun. We had stayed in this hotel couple of times (15 & 12 years back), when Kodai was much more quit & peaceful, so this was quite a shock for us. We were told that April to June is a peak time (& mainly the weekends) when Kodai is jam packed with people & vehicles. They said Kodai is still quite & peaceful place after July, so have this in mind when you plan your trip.
The travel desk arranges for the trip to Berijam lake which is a more peaceful & quite place worth visiting.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a good lake view.
