“So much more than an overnight stay!”
Reviewed 28 November 2011

This is a wonderful and fascinating place to stay...and turned out to be one of the more memorable stops of our month-long trip through Rajasthan. We arrived at this beautiful old fort for lunch and were amazed at the spread laid out for the two of us. My partner was especially impressed with one of the dishes, a meat curry, which he quickly announced was the curry of the trip for him! But it's not just the food that's wonderful...the hospitality is incredible. We learnt so much from Mr Singh and Ajay...about their family history, the history of the fort and their big plans for its future. We thoroughly enjoyed the trip out to the family temple and lake, and it was fun wandering through the town with a friendly member of their staff. That evening, we ate another fabulous meal in a beautiful courtyard setting and enjoyed the comapny of our hosts. And as for our room...it was probably the most beautiful we have stayed in anywhere. I felt very sad as we drove away the next morning, one night just wasn't enough.

An amazing experience. I loved the property and the room where I stayed. The charming Mr. Singh and his son Ajay are extremely hospitable hosts who pay great attention to detail. The overall ambience of the hotel is beautiful. There were fresh roses in the room. Peacocks roamed the garden. The food was delicious and organic. We were even provided a memorable tour of the family's temples and lake. A quality experience worth every penny!

We had the most amazing stay at Fort Begu, from the moment we arrived we felt special. Mr Rawal Singh and his son Ajay greeted us with a tasty lunch served in the large sitting room; it was fascinating to hear the history of the family and the fort which has been part of their family for many years. Our room was beautiful with magical wall paintings set amongst coloured and mirrored glass. They have done a delightful renovation on the bedrooms. Our bathroom was great with the best shower we had in India. Mr Singh & Ajay took us out in the afternoon to their lake and old summer house which was very special - such a stunning spot. On returning to the fort, we had a walk around the town of Begu with Mr Singh which was a once in a lifetime experience. What a great town and the local community could not have made us feel more welcome.

We had a superb dinner under the stars by the plunge pool, again delicious food which was overseen by Mr Singh’s wife. Lots of interesting conversation with Rawal and Ajay about the plans they have for the fort. How could we not sleep well in our very comfortable bed in such an exquisite room. We wish we had stayed more than one night A delicious breakfast was enjoyed the next morning with the best Darjeeling tea served with saffron milk – amazing! Thank you to the family and staff for such a special night.

For those wanting to experience a few luxurious days staying in a glorious unspoilt Rajasthan palace, this is the place. Fort Begu is a beautiful if somewhat distressed palace with six splendid bedrooms, some with wall paintings, coloured glass, mirror work and all with private terraces All have ultra modern large bathrooms. Our bedroom was the most beautiful we have ever stayed in, decorated in an authentic and refined style. The food is homecooked and delicious, the staff are utterly charming. This is very much a family concern and overseen by the impressive Raj Sawai Hari Singh (ex government minister) and his son Ajay. They are hugely informed, both culturally and historically, are keen to share their knowledge and most importantly to make sure you have a marvellous visit. Trips are arranged around the grounds, to their summer palace (a few miles away) and to the Menal temple (20 miles away). This is a very special place, book soon before its overrun with guests. The family have big plans......
