Dev Niwas is a wonderful and wonderfully-positioned hotel in the old historic part of Bundi, very close to the fort and palace. It's a charming, mid-sized place, with a lovely central courtyard. Our room, with its marble floors, reminded us of hotel rooms in Italy we've enjoyed staying in. Best of all is the rooftop restaurant, with amazing views of the fort/palace and the entire city. There's a rooftop life that one can observe and feel a part of from the top of Dev Niwas. We visited a few days before the big kite festival and it was heart-warming to see a sky full of kites, many operated by young people on the rooftops of nearby buildings. The rooftop is also a great place for viewing both sunrise and sunset. The food in the restaurant is first-rate: fresh and delicious. Best of all is the service in the hotel: the entire staff is helpful and friendly. We particularly enjoyed talking with Mohammad, our server in the restaurant, who gave us a local's view of the city, and made us feel very welcome. This is our first trip to India, and when we arrived in Bundi, we weren't sure what to expect; it has ended up being a highlight of our trip in India so far, and a lot of that has to do with Dev Niwas.

The location was excellent in the centre of Bundi, allowing us to discover the town in our own time. The hotel and our room were extremely comfortable and good value for money. The staff were very friendly and welcoming.

Unfortunately, this was the worst value and worst quality of service hotel we have stayed in during our two week trip around Rajasthan.

We had arranged to have a pickup at the rail station where we arrived after dark. The manager at the hotel completely forgot and we were left standing there with our bags in the dark and empty station except for a group of touts who saw us as an obvious target. Eventually, after half an hour of waiting we arranged our own transport to the hotel, but it was an uncomfortable start to our visit to Bundi.

On arrival we were greeted by the new manager, who is originally from Udaipur, and (rather unprofessionally) regaled us with how much he hated working at this hotel in Bundi and how he wanted to go back to Udaipur. He didn’t know that we were arriving or how many nights we were staying, and it all came across as very sloppy.

We had booked the suite room at this hotel as a special treat. When we told this to the staff they sniggered. When we were shown to our room, it was not a suite at all - just a very large, tired looking room.(Incidentally - everywhere else we stayed in Rajasthan was marvellous and had the warmest kindest service, so this really was a one off and it was just a shame we had booked the so called fancy room here).

We went down to the manager before we unpacked and tried to explain that the suite room wasn’t quite what we expected, and were there any other rooms available that we could look at. He refused.

We had showers with inadequate hot water and following this, we tried to sleep. Unfortunately the suite room is located right over a busy road and the only way I managed to get a few hours sleep was wearing headphone with music. There were engines, horns, revving, temple bells, yelling, call to prayer, amplified sermons all through windows that didn’t shut properly. In addition to this the bed linen was dirty with holes in the pillows.

After an awful night, we packed up and went out for breakfast (dinner at the restaurant was mediocre and not a good ambience - they had the radio blaring out). When we got back - after some tired thinking it through - we told the manager that we had decided not to spend a second night there and could we settle up. However, because it it was after 10 o’clock, he charged us an extra Rs 2,000 over and above our extortionate room rate! That’s more than some of our nicer places cost, and added together made for a very expensive mistake.

I’d strongly urge anyone else considering staying here to look elsewhere - there were some nice looking haveli by the lake. Unprofessional service and a bad atmosphere meant this hotel wasn’t worth anything like what was being charged for it. Yes the central courtyard of the building was pretty, and I have to say the man who gave us travel advice was very kind and helpful, but perhaps Dev Niwas needs to present itself as a more humble offer - with prices to match.

I would gladly give Dev Niwas 5/5, were it not for a couple of deficiencies, both of which could be remedied easily should the management so wish.
1. No tea/coffee-making facilities in the room
2. No room-heater available. It was jolly cold in my room in the evenings and early mornings in December.
Each room has its own hot water-cylinder, which is rather small. With care, I had just enough water for a shower. If two people wished to shower, the second would have to wait 10-15 minutes for the water to heat up.
My room ( a suite, really) was comfortable, quiet and well-furnished.
All the staff were very pleasant and helpful. The restaurant waiter was particularly attentive and diligent, and the food at breakfast and dinner was excellent, and reasonably priced.

We arrived in Bundi after a mad dash around Rajasthan hoping to chill out for a few days and our prayers were answered both by the lovely town and this hotel. We had a basic room, which was quite fine. Very clean and comfortable. Minimal noise from the street which was a pleasant change from previous places we stayed at. The staff are all absolutely fantastic- can’t praise them enough. There was a festival going on during our stay and the hotel manager took us out on a tuktuk one evening to catch the festivities. The restaurant staff were all so sweet and the food was delicious, both breakfasts and suppers. The haveli has beautiful decor throughout: would love to take it all home! Many thanks to all of the staff for looking after us so well.
