This 300 year old haveli is beautifully restored and expertly managed. The food (all veg) is exceptional, locally sourced and prepared in house. With the highest rooftop restaurant in town and the castle as a backdrop the dinner experience is incomparable.

We have just spent 2 nights in this establishment. What a lovely surprise... this place has the old world elegance and charm of India. The rooms are beautifully decorated. The staff are calm, friendly and helpful. The manager is always on hand to help or impart information. Eating at the restaurant was also great, the best food we have had so far. I would highly recommend this place. The only negative was the mattress was a to firm but that might suit you. So if you want to spend a few days in a more relaxed atmosphere then I would go to Bundi.

Room Tip: Families will have to get separate rooms. Plenty of choice for couples

We stayed in Bundi as a "stopover" between Udaipur and Jaipur as recommended by our agent Ric at Imagine India and boy are we glad we did! As we only had 3 weeks in Rajasthan we were seeing travelling by car and seeing the main cities, but as the drive between Udaipur and Jaipur is a long one we decided to spend 2 nights in Bundi.

By Indian standards Bundi is a small town. What we particularly liked about the town was the fact that you could walk around it and enjoy it at your own pace, although we did have a guide on our first day and thought he was amazing - he gave us a real insight we wouldn't otherwise have had.

Bundi Vilas is tucked up a little side street and appears to be a vertical building - lots of steps to keep you fit! We were immediately taken aback when we saw the entrance - it is impressive and very well kept. We were met by Arun the owner (the property has been in his family for over 300 years) and taken upstairs. Although we didn't see any of the other rooms we got the impression that they are all set at different levels of the building.

Our room was on the highest but one level - on the same level that you eat breakfast, and although not huge, was ample in size for a couple of nights. It was beautifully decorated and very clean.

This old Haveli also has a restaurant (which is open to non residents) which is set up on the roof terrace in the evening. We also popped up early to have a drink whilst we watched the sun set. Without a doubt this is the best view in the whole of Bundi as the Haveli is built almost adjacent to the old Fort walls so you can watch the sun down and admire the floodlit Fort, whilst watching the monkeys go home for the night and the bats fly out - it really is a magical sight! The food is excellent and very reasonable - whether or not you are staying in the hotel you must try the food!

We are so pleased that we stopped over in Bundi (and Bhainsrorgarh - see my other review) to break our journey. Both Bundi itself and Bundi Vilas were wonderful. We only wished we could have stayed another night so that we could have enjoyed this fantastic place for even longer.

We spent only one night at Bundi Vilas and wished we had booked two. We were traveling from Jaipur to Udaipur on a two week trip through Rajasthan this past November. We wanted a place to break up the long drive and our travel agent, Gaurav Sharma of Pan India Tours recommended Bundi.

Although this is a bit off the beaten path, it is a fantastic village and well worth a visit. The village is not full of tourists and the hotels are small and intimate. Bundi Vilas is accessed by a steep path up from the main road. When you arrive at the front door, you realize that the hotel is built upwards against the mountain and leans up against the wall of a beautiful fort which overlooks the town.

You do have to climb up a few flights of stairs to get to the business office level and then there are just a few rooms per floor as you continue to climb. We stayed in a lovely room off of a small dining room. It was comfortable and interesting. Each room is unique.

Dinner was actually served on the rooftop (another steep flight up) where you can have drinks and watch the lights come on magnificently showcasing the town's marvelous fort. Meals were prepared by the "aunty" of the two young men who introduced themselves as the managers.

The town itself is interesting and fun to walk though. We took a ride to the "Queen's" Stepwell and then meandered our way through the market and up to the fort for a magnificent view of the valley below and extraordinary paintings throughout the palace.

All in all, I recommend Bundi as a stop on your Indian trip and Bundi Vilas as the place to stay while there. ALSO - if you've never had "poha", an Indian rice dish served for breakfast, order it here. It must be ordered the night before, but it's worth it.

Bundi was possibly our favourite place in Rajasthan - as beautiful as anywhere else we visited, much quieter and cleaner and the (only partially maintained) palace and fort are stunning. Although it is a bit out of the way, there is a fast new road so it doesn't take that long to get there. Bundi Vilas is a beautiful, multi-story Haveli (don't go if you can't handle lots of stairs) right up against the palace walls and the views from their rooftop restaurant, both of the palace and the city, are stunning and unobstructed, unlike most places lower down in the town. The food there is excellent and inexpensive, although you can eat nearly as well for less in many other places nearby too. The staff are good, if a bit quirky and awkward at times and our room was beautiful. The Haveli is no more than a five minute walk to the palace entrance and the fort, both of which are well worth the effort and long climb up. We shared the palace with perhaps ten others and had the fort entirely to ourselves. Do take a stick to scare off monkeys, but we didn't actually have to use ours once.

Bundi and Bundi Vilas are must visits in our view - a great place to relax and retreat from the chaos of elsewhere, although you really only need one day to see it all so don't stay more than a night or two. The other attractions of Bundi, such as the step wells and summer palace, aren't really worth spending extra time here for.

The only negatives would be the wifi, which was a bit slow (think that's a Bundi-wide problem though) and the shower, which didn't always stay hot for very long. Otherwise a perfect place and highly recommended.
