Bharatpur was hot. Temp soaring above 47 degree celcius. Our room was so hot that even Airconditioner was not showing anf effect in the room so swith over to downstair room. That was cool. So in summer be ( May-June) carefull. Food was very good non spicy and No Fat always served Hot. I made a good use of their Library. We had a hell of a trouble in getting the Taxi for Agra. At last we took Bus that took similar time to a Taxi and costwise fifteen times cheaper. Train is also a better option to reach Bharatpur from Agra Fort station.

The Spoonbill is a fairly cheap guesthouse (250 for a double room) that has much that certain people would like, while others could not stand. (Of course, I'm assuming you'll visit to see the wildlife at the 500-metres-away Keoladeo Park, as there's not much other reason to visit the town).
Mr Singh speaks good English, while his wife cooks great, fair price, Thalis. Mr Singh arranged a very knowledgeable guide for 100 rupees an hour who spoke very good English and knew the English, Hindi and sometimes Latin names of far more wildlife than I did. More importantly, he spotted some beautiful birds that I would have never noticed with my naked eyes (such as the scarlet minivet and a sleeping nightjar).
On the downside, my room had enough mosquitoes to make count dracula jealous. I killed about 75, which I enjoyed in spite of my Buddhistesque attitude to wildlife, before putting the fan on full, pulling up the blanket and taking my chances with the remaining 25 or so.
The rooms could definitely do with a makeover, the water pressuer is lousy, but the bed was comfy and I had a fine night's sleep after a nice meal.

So, depending on your budget and priorities, the Spoonbill could be fine or unimaginable, though I reckon the mosquito problem is shared all-around the other hotels too.

P.S... I was told there would be little water at Keoladeo, famous for its migratory water birds, and that was correct. The ridiculously bare amount of water had been pumped up from underground wells. This is a real shame and will disappoint many. But as a first time visitor I saw many beautiful, amazing birds (even a Spoonbill and a Spotted bill Duck) and loads of mammals including nilgai, jackals, and deer that made the afternoon and morning I spent there worthwhile the trip from Agra.

We had made reservations at the Spoonbill well in advance by phoning them directly and had booked for two nights.
Positive things first. Location-wise it is great since it is walking distance from the bird sanctuary. In addition if you dont feel upto walking the less than 1 km distance, you can hire the numerous cyclerikshaws which are fun to ride and cheap as well. It is also located very close to the junction where buses to Fatehpursikri stop. Also their charges are fairly low.
Now comes the bad part. We reached there around lunch time and were greeted with cold rice and hard chapatis which fell far below our expectations. We did not expect grand fare, just some simple but hot decent lunch to fill our hungy bellies. The food was so bad that we hardly ate in spite of our hunger!!! For the rest of our stay there, we got the buffet lunch and dinner (quite decent) at the govt.-run Hotel Saras which was nearby.
Our next peeve was that although they have some big airy well-lit rooms on the first floor, we were given a dark dingy room on the ground floor in spite of having vacancies on the first floor. We realised later the reason for this! The hotel actually denigrates hapless Indians to the dark dingy rooms while the good rooms are reserved for non-Indians! That really annoyed us no end and we actually moved out after one night even though we payed for two nights. Just on principle!!! In this day and age, this is the first time we came across discrimination in our own country!!! That was totally unacceptable to us. We were not some free-loading bunch that landed there without reservations out to destroy the peace of fellow travellers. They had no reason whatsoever to do what they did. The room we stayed in had a clean bathroom, but the less said of the room, the better. Bed linen was dirty and it was so dark that we had to turn on the lights even during the day.
If the hotel learns to put some outdated practices behind them and treat all clients with the same respect, I think it would be a great place. Plus improve their housekeeping of course!
The bird sanctuary of course made up for all our hotel troubles since it was time well spent and it is a great educational experience for adults and children alike!!!
