I went to Pul Kanjari 2 years ago after reading about it in a blog. I was instantly sold by the idea of a lesser known place within drivable distance of Amritsar. It is a short and enjoyable drive to the village passing through green fields and beautiful sceneries. I was instantly in love with the rural charm of the place the moment I reached there.

Pul Kanjari has an interesting history, a war memorial, a single house (at least that was the case 2 years ago) and 300m proximity to the border. I interacted with the only family there who offered me some tea and great insight into the village life. I also enjoyed seeing the war memorial. The army camp in Pul Kanjari invited me to see the Pakistan flag from their telescope on the other side. It was so amazing to see a country that was a part of us only a few decades ago, now heavily guarded on both sides.

Dont go there with a lot of expectations as all you can see is a rundown heritage site, an enthusiastic guard/guide who will tell you all about the history of the place, a war memorial and border fencing. However, the feeling of being so close to history and border is a feeling like none other. It is definitely worth a day trip and something I would recommend over wagah border that has only become a show over the years.

Both my wife and I visited this site on Sunday. A must visit place

The historic Pul Kanjri located about 35 km away from Amritsar. Tribune photo
A large number of tourist destinations such as Gobindgarh Fort, Sadda Pind, Punjab State War Heroes’ Memorial and Museum has come up in the city, but there are some sites that have been forgotten by the residents.

One such site is the historic Pul Kanjri, located about 35 km away from Amritsar. Situated near Daoka and Dhanoa Kalan villages, Pul Kanjri is said to be a stopover for Maharaja Ranjit Singh during his business trips to Lahore.

According to a famous story, dancer Moran used to entertain the king. But one day, she lost her slippers while crossing a canal nearby. As she refused to dance with grief over losing one of her slippers, Maharaja Ranjit Singh ordered to construct a bridge. After that, the place was known as Pul Kanjri. The place was damaged in the 1971 India-Pakistan war. Many years ago, it was restored again by the authorities. In remembrance of the 1971 war heroes, a memorial was built nearby.

Pul Kanjri is a reminder of the places that narrate stories attached to them. At present, there is a pool and remains of a ruined baradaari. The site also depicts the values of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. These frescoes are laced with floral frames.
