“loved to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 March 2010

The Tea Sanctuary comprises recently refurbished old bungalows that were used by the European inhabitants. One can glimpse the scenic vistas of Munnar Valley from here. It would not be any embellishment to say that a stay at these bungalows is an experience in itself. All the facilities are provided here, to offer a luxurious stay to the guests. Due to its vast green periphery, there were many honeymooners present

My friend and I stayed here and loved every second of it. We had the Chokanad Bungalow, which came with a cook and staff person, both of whom were incredibly sweet and catered to every request. They really went above and beyond all my expectations! The setting is completely unbeatable and the bungalows are much, much larger than I expected, with a study, living room, dining room and kitchen. The bedrooms were huge. It was also super clean and was in fact one of the few places in India where I felt comfortable eating raw vegetable salads because the cook was clearly so mindful of cleanliness. I would definitely stay here again!

Kenan Devan / The Tea Estate is the 40,000 acre tea plantation which was bought from Tata Tea in 2005 by the employees of the company. The tourism wing of the company has about a dozen Villas at various location in Munnar which centrally manages booking. The website is comprehensive http://www.theteasanctuary.com/ and well-designed with good pictures. When we booked, it seemed clear that we were not dealing with a "service-oriented" institution but one that was more bureaucratic in nature. I actually had to go to the KD office to make my payment in cash before I checked in--which I found unusual. The properties themselves are in gorgeous locations but the amenities, rooms and utilities are both poorly maintained, borderline dirty and poorly equipped (there was not butter at our breakfast and we were paying Rs 5000 per night; the bathtub had not been properly cleaned and looked like it was from the 1960s while the soap and shampoo packets were antique in bad way). The one very positive outcome was the ability to apply for a day pass to go beyond the Ervikalum estate into Gravel Banks--which is at the very end of the nature preserve, past some tiny villages. For a fly fishing fanantic, this was heaven. In short, there needs to be a complete revamp of these properties to furnish them with higher -end amenities (for instance, change the black curtains to a something more light) and switch to a service-oriented high end institution. I would like to come back to the KD tea estates one day, once the revamp has taken place!
