“Nice enough, but overpriced”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 January 2012

Rose Gardens homestay is situated about 10km out of scruffy little Munnar and is a generally nice place to spend a day or two. The rooms are large and clean and the bathrooms are too. Rajee's cooking (breakfast, dinner) is generally very good and Tomy is an attentive host. My experience was, however, marred by a couple of things. First, there was never any hot water, which is unacceptable for a place that charges INR 3500 a night. Citing that the homestay is "eco-friendly" simply does not cut it. Second, there was constant noise from the workers on site who were building a cabinet or some such thing. 8 hours of hammering was just unbearable. This too is unacceptable for a place that charges such an amount. Finally, I was really put off my the backhand way in which we were charged for the beer that was offered to us during dinner. Meals are included in the cost, but there was no mention that the drinks we were offered during dinner were not included. This is, to be sure, a fairly minor complaint, but to learn of these extra unmentioned charges while settling the bill was, in my opinion, sneaky.

I ended up at Rose Gardens after a disastrous houseboat experience followed by a pretty awful bus ride from Allepey to Munnar. I was feeling run down and desperate for a good night's rest and recovery. The homestay with Tomy and Raji was perfect. The food Raji cooked was fresh and delicious (I still think about her coconut pancakes, and the fresh sliced passionfruit served with each meal), the surrounding grounds with Tomy's plants and flowers and bee hives were really tranquil, and the other folks staying there were cool and friendly (we ate meals together). Tomy took us on a walking tour through the tea plantations and to a freshwater lake that was awesome. Back at the house, the rooms were large and clean, and the beds had proper mattresses. After my stay at the Rose Gardens I had my color, energy and sanity back and was ready for the next set of adventures. The family is very warm and friendly and make you feel at home. I highly recommend.

We loved staying with Tomy and Raji and family, we had two wonderful nights in their home and were made to feel so welcome. The rooms were excellent, clean and spacious with ensuites. Our first night we arrived at 10 pm after delays from a petrol strike and Raji has prepared dinner for us, the food was excellent. We really enjoyed the walk with Dileep to the tea plantations and the home spice and graden tour. We meet some great people in the homestay and would really recommend going to the Silk factory in Munnar. Tomy was extremely helpful when I left a (bra) behind and had it transported to Kochi! If we were to ever to return to Kerala, we would definitely want to return to the Rose gardens to this hospitable family.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the garden at the rear are quieter and great views

Thank you to Tomy and the whole family for a wonderful stay. The food was amazing, all three sons were so helpful and charming, Deepu was so cute and entertaining. The garden and Tomys tour was very interesting. The only place in India where we drank the delicious rain water straight from the tap! The tea was the best we have had in India. Would be sure to return.

Raji & Tomy gave us a very warm welcome to their home. We arrived in Munnar on the bus from Madurai (a spectacular journey climbing up the Western Ghats) & Tomy had arranged an autorick to pick us up and take us to Rosegardens, about 30 (bumpy) minutes away from Munnar on the main road west of town. We stayed in one of two spacious rooms at the back of the house. The food was plentiful, with a good variety of dishes & delicious. I appreciated being able to watch Raji cook one evening and trying to learn something about cooking Indian food. We were there at the beginning of the monsoon so our one full day was rained out and we spent the time hanging out on the spacious veranda looking at the birds and trees and catching up on sleep and post card writing. The rain meant there were power cuts but this was no problem as there's a generator and plenty of candles. We were travelling on a budget so this was at the more expensive end of our range, however the experience is unique, the rooms very new and it was good to be so well looked after. We enjoyed meeting Raji and Tomy and their family.
