“Elephant poo paper and hand printed textiles”
Reviewed 19 April 2012

The reception staff at Windermere Estate kindly made a few suggestions for our stay in Munnar including this TATA company social enterprise.

Surpisingly our driver from Red Dot Tours had never been there before and had a little difficulty finding it. We were pleased we went as we were unable to make the obligatory stop at the Tea Museum which was closed on the Monday we were in town.

TATA employs local people with disabilities that otherwise would be unable to find employment on the tea plantations. The cynic in mean is always a little unsure of what really goes on behind the scenes. At face value, it looks to be a very worthwhile enterprise.

There are staff who provide free information on the different processes involved in textile dyeing and printing (including some lovely Japanese styles) as well as paper making.

You are not allowed to take photos on the tours which made us feel happy that the staff were not being exploited by tourists in this way.

The shop has beautiful items for sale that are worthy of their price tags. Don't miss it!

“Humbling experience”
Reviewed 18 April 2012

During my recent visit to Munnar I went to see Aranya Naturals, the Welfare Center at Srishti .
I had a very warm welcome from Mrs Victoria Vijayakumar and she explained the process of fabric dyeing and how they achieve different patterns.
They also make handmade paper and the ingredients used are just amazing.
Everyone working there looked happy.
They all do amazing work and it just shows that having a disability doesn't stop
you being creative.

Their bakery items are very good quality and tasty - not to forget the famous strawberry jam.
If you would like to visit somewhere that leaves a lasting impression I would recommend Aranya Naturals.

“See hand made paper and printed textiles being made”
Reviewed 7 April 2012

If you're visiting the Kannan Devan Tea Museum do not miss a visit to see paper being hand made and material printed it's very closely located. It's not set up as a visitor attraction, but you'll be warmly welcomed and given a tour of the two workshops. Avoid 1 to 2 pm if you wish to see the work taking place!

The material is dyed with natural colours and printed in various ways, including batik. You can support the social enterprise by buying from the small shop.

Photographs are not allowed anywhere in the compound.
