“Very, very kind host”
Reviewed 24 April 2011

We stayed 3 nights at JJ Cottage for our first visit in Munnar.

LOCATION:
JJ Cottage is located in old Munnar. About 10minute from JJ Cottage is a small tea plantation with good walking trails and on the same area is Royal Retreat hotel which serves good curries. It is a good base to explore tourist attractions such as: Tata Tea Museum (2k away), Eravikulam National Park (15km) and Top Station (30km).
100 meters from JJ Cottage are two Internet cafe's and a few stores.

ROOM ITSELF:
We stayed in one of the double rooms and it was clean.
We had our own, clean/well-maintained bathroom with very good hot water (very important in the cold weather of Munnar). Quiet room. All these essential features for a cheap rate.

In a nearby hotel, we had a look at one of their double rooms. The room was very large with big bed, nice furnishings etc however the bathroom was moldy and dirty. The room rate was nearly 4x more than what JJ Cottage was charging for their basic but significantly Much Cleaner room.

STAFF & GENERAL SERVICE:
The best thing about JJ Cottage is the very kind and personal service of the owners and more specifically, Eric. From enquiry, to booking until the day we checked out, Eric was extremely helpful. Eric organized a taxi for us to be pick up from Fort Cochin to Munnar. When we arrived at JJ Cottage, Eric made it very easy for us to organize transport and
tours. For our daily tours, Eric recommended a driver named Kuthi and he was superb! Safe driver and knowledgeable guide at the same time (which we were not expecting because we initially thought that Kuthi would only look after our transportation).

Eric is the perfect host and we had an enjoyable time in Munnar because he helped us a lot. We highly recommend staying at JJ Cottage.

I went Munnar on 12th March and i stayed in JJ Cottage, This is my first trip towards Munnar. I have a lot of concerns till i reach JJ Cottage, but once i reached and met with Mr. Jain i feel like i reached ma home.
All the amenities are A++. Rooms are well maintained, Neat Bath room, Both Hot and Normal water available all the time. Library is also available. Nothing to worry about the safety, we feel just like home. A safe place for Families with ladies.

JJ's is one of those places you feel comfortable to come home to. Upon our arrival, Sajini (the gorgeous hostess) welcomed us with a warm smile and showed us to our room. We stayed in a basic double room -- small, yet cosy, clean, bright and spotless with a little tv. The bathroom was sparkling and had hot water for the cooler mountain surroundings:) Both Sajini and her husband are extremely beautiful people -- they'd go out of their way to make sure your stay is pleasant.

We particularly loved the location because it was away from the noisy, hectic town centre. It's only a 15 min walk from the centre. And if you're wanting to venture out by foot, it's only a few minutes from the tea plantations, back villages and hills.

A 20 minute walk from the cluttered town centre of Munnar, yet still in close reach of restaurants, the river and walking paths, the location suited us well. From the window we could just see the back of a Hindu shrine, but the view of tea fields is fabulous from the end of the little road. The family were quiet but friendly; they did our washing for us, made us many cups of tea and organised someone very friendly and cheap to take us trekking. The rooms were pretty small and very basic, but they did the job. The bed was large and we were given a thick, soft blanket which proved necessary. There is no food provided but the busy cafe just around the corner does standard meals, and some of the posher hotels around by the river do fabulous all-you-can-eat dinners for just 200 or so rupees (about £3).

One thing I recommend is taking toilet roll or tissues with you, as these weren't provided (as in many other budget places in India).

JJ Cottage was recommended by Lonely Planet and on this occassion they called it right. Munnar is a beautiful town with stunning scenery. The homestay is slightly off the road and the rooms are small but they are spottlessly clean and they are good value for money. The family who run the establishment are very helpful and good humoured. There is a very good book exchnage at the cottage. There is only one nearby resturant but it is very good and cheap and useful on dark nights with limited street lighting.
