We visited the mangroves as part of a Tour by Locals with Mario (reviewed separately). The tour was in a motorized canoe with a very knowledgeable naturalist guide. The birds alone are well worth the trip, without even considering the beauty and calm of the river. Be well covered and use plenty of bug spray.

We went with a naturalist, which was arranged by Mario of My Trip to Ecuador. It was incredible. We saw large birds including ibis, several species of heron, egrets and spoonbills, as well as a sloth in a tree, crabs at low tide and a crocodile.

I highly recommend it!

We took this trip before our flight to Lima. To give us enough time the guide picked us up from the hotel at 7:30 and returned us at 3:00 to catch our flight. The trip was not cheap, at $100 each, but worth every penny. We had a short stop at a rice field to see some varieties of birds and at a market where some of our group wanted to buy water and our guide bought us some fresh pineapple. Then we arrived at the reserve. Our guide told us about the black and red mangroves and the differences. We saw crabs and spiders on our way to the river. At the river we went on a motorised canoe and saw lots of different birds, our favourites being the spoonbils and the ibis. Then we went for a walk and hunt for howler monkeys. We did see a large group of these, but most of the group also got bit by mosquitos despite having long sleeves, etc and insect repellent. We enjoyed a traditional ecuadorian meal att to a farm for lunch. Here we were given a talk about making chocolate and a chance to taste 100% chocolate. This was really interesting, but we had to rush because we had a plane to catch. It was a good day and recommended, but take care with anti-mosquito preparation.

Churute Ecological Reserve is located in the canton Naranjal, it has a wide variety of animals, plants, and thousands of acres, full of mangrove
Churute there are three roads to churute . Admission is free and the tour could last 3 hours. Most importantly, you must wear with comfortable clothes and ready to explore nature.
Crab is the the most popular food in Churute, which added to the beautiful scenery offered by the reserve, gives you an unforgettable experience just a few minutes from Guayaqui

We did this as part of a tour so had a guide. They knew where to go as we saw the usually hard-to-find horned screamers, spider and howler monkeys, spoonbills, ibises, herons, and raptors. We had insect resistant clothing and mosquitos weren't bad but we sprayed our exposed skin anyway.
