Breathtaking location, truly unique in Northern Adriatic. The place is basically a hotel restaurant, hotel being very, very, very small – but offering again a fabulous & large suite with a full wine cupboard, sauna and jacuzzi with that same enchanting view, ideal for newlyweds. Best very reasonable money can buy.
This time we only came to eat, as we heard many positive expert opinions on the young new chef. Our entry was close to a disaster – we made our tasting menu lunch booking through an owning family member who clearly forgot all about it. Thus the chef was not even there… The waiter on duty (excellent, as it turned out) still persuaded us to stay, and promised culinary fireworks even in absence of creator. As we had made a fuss of it weeks earlier to our friends, who fortunately came with a major delay, I decided to give the house a try and hide the sad and unexpected lack of internal communication.
Coming to the point, they made it. Both the waiter and the sous who took the chef's part. Wine list is relatively good, some less than usual while highly interesting Croatian wines, vintages missing (in 2018…), markups customary for the entire region, cheap eateries included. Dishes coming were a feast for the eye (including appropriate tableware), combinations of taste and structure joyful and charming. Now that Plavi podrum in Volosko has reentered in force the Michelin star competition, this is probably the second best adress in the wider Rijeka-Opatija region. A 15+ on my personal 1-20 scale. Sad that I could not meet the chef for a chat.
Some useful (concrete and regularly updated) info on website would be highly recommended, as well as introduction of contemporary wine list handling. Both (and the disastrous communication) nearly made me reduce my overall mark... But still, combination of incredible location and truly good cuisine is something I will easily advise to every foodie and romantic soul wondering where to go in Kvarner.
