Review of Fig Cafe Bar

Fig Cafe Bar
Ranked #6 of 163 Restaurants in Hvar
Certificate of Excellence
Price range: US$ 8 - US$ 23
Description: Located down a charming 16th century alleyway, Fig is focused on vibrant, interesting food with an emphasis on healthy alternatives. Whether you're looking for something a little spicier like our Mexican pulled pork and vegetarian curry, or something lighter like our unique selection of flatbreads or salads, you'll always get something fresh, fun and different. Because of our limited size we can not take reservations of less than 8 for Fig Cafe, however if you'd like to book a table for our sister restaurant in Starigrad please give a call.

Went here with a friend looking to get a burrito, was not disappointed! We arrived between breakfast and lunch so had the opportunity to try both the breakfast burrito and lunch burrito (breakfast being veggie and lunch being chicken), both were superb. Spoke briefly with the owner, very nice man named Jeff, offered us a free beer as we said we would return later with more friends as the food was that good, we declined the beer for some stupid reason but did return the next day with friends and again it was awesome. Top stuff!! Great value too, especially considering the extortionate prices of Hvar.

We went to the cafe at 12.45pm and were told to come back 45 mins later at 1.30pm as they were going to close for that duration to prepare for their lunch menu. There were other people still seated, which we thought were finishing off their food before the café closes. We asked if we should make a reservation but the waiter told us that this wasn't necessary. We returned at 1.20pm and to our surprise, every single table was already occupied, with some people already having been served with their orders! We ended up having to wait another 45 mins, with a growing queue of people behind us and a few before us. Food took about 20-30 mins to arrive. We ordered the vegetarian curry & asked if they were able to do a vegetarian version of their green chilli burrito (which previous reviews have stated they had done with a great resulting dish), which they agreed to quite spontaneously. However, when the dishes arrived, we were unfortunately quite disappointed. The vegetarian curry was somewhat bland despite the sauce tasting like too much curry powder had been added (had a grainy texture and a slight bitterness that comes from adding too much masala spice). And the burrito was really a shamble - it was basically just roasted vegetables (another dish on their menu) wrapped in a tortilla with some green curry sauce on top. There wasn't any beans, guacamole or sour cream on it as was done with the meat version (we know this because the couple we were sharing the table with had ordered the meat version of the burrito). So there was really nothing about it that was even close to a burrito except for the tortilla. Also, the couple we shared the table with had also ordered a roasted veggie salad, so we couldn't help but suspect that the chef just got lazy and made extra of that person's dish and simply wrapped it in a tortilla to make ours, especially since both our dishes came out together. I would have appreciated if they were just upfront and say they couldn't do a vegetarian version and I would have happily ordered an actual vegetarian dish from the menu, and if not, to at least put in a little effort. Apart from that, the staff were friendly and nice. I would just recommend going as early as you can from your preferred eating time due to the constant queue and potentially long wait, and to stick to the original dishes on the menu, especially for vegetarians. Non-vegetarians would otherwise likely have a very good experience as we heard other customers compliment the non-veg dishes very highly during our visit.

Solid food. Has a Cali-vibe take on Mexican food. All fresh ingredients and super tasty. Owner was very attentive and an overall cool dude . Would recommend the shredded pulled pork and chicken burrito.

Ditto what everyone else is saying about this place. Avoid the terrible tourist places with bad serviced bad food and head straight to fig cafe, the food is INCREDIBLE, and there are loads of veggie and gluten-free options. Its easy to find and the staff were so lovely and welcoming, the music was great and the overall atmosphere was perfect. We were so sad that we only found this place on our last night that we decided to head back to Hvar just to have breakfast here because no one can resist a veggie breakfast burrito with a side of avocado!!

My boyfriend and I had a wonderful meal at the fig cafe, which we chose because they had a vegan option. The portions were huge and reasonably priced, the staff were friendly and helpful, and you can sit outside in a cute little street to eat. Would definitely visit again!
