I had no idea what to expect, but based on the reviews I suspected would be good. My expectations were WAY surpassed. The property itself takes your breath away - stunning. Xizhou village is like a step back in time - and makes for a great base and nice evening strolls. But it was the staff - from the Lindens themselves to those in the front office (and those you never see), provides the is THE icing on the cake. Everyone is very friendly and accommodating - but never in your face. A nice balance. Depending on what you want to do - they can arrange. I really enjoyed the more local experiences. After visiting both Lijiang and Dali - I was so happy with my decision to stay at the Linden Center and in Xizhou. Wifi is availble all over the property - so you are always connected. It may not be the easiest place to get to - but it is well worth the trip and believe me, you may be tempted to never leave.

Room Tip: Request an upper floor for better views, however all will provide a comfortable and quite sleep. Wi...

We just returned from a wonderful trip to China, highlighted by our stay at the Linden Centre. The Lindens and their staff have created something special in Xizhou that they can be proud of. Their beautiful renovation of a unique space, decorated with artifacts from all over China is something to be enjoyed. The people that work at the Linden Centre love their jobs, you can just tell by their energy and excitement about the area.

Room Tip: We had a double room off the second courtyard and it was just fine.

We have traveled all over the world and our experience at the Linden Centre tops anywhere else we have stayed. This is a great option for anyone interested in a happy trip outside the big cities of China. It was our first family trip to China and our time at the Centre was at the start of our trip. The Lindens are wonderful hosts and the Centre and its activities reflect their thoughtful consideration of details important to interests and concerns of diverse travelers. The Centre is in a beautiful location in the small village of Xizhou between mountains and Erhai Lake. With close access to Dali Old City and both lakeside and hillside villages one can easily enjoy many days of diverse activities using the Centre as a base site. We had adjoining second floor rooms overlooking a beautiful, traditional style courtyard, very quiet at night and easy to sleep. We enjoyed excellent fresh and tasty local food (our preference) though familiar Western options are readily available for all meals. The Centre has diverse spaces to relax or socialize as one wants. Photo opportunities abound, both inside and out, and views from the terraces are terrific. But the best aspect of the Centre, in our opinion, are the friendly and engaging team of owners and staff who perfectly balanced letting us explore on our own, teaching us about the history and cultures of Xizhou/Dali, and leading us on memorable excursions. These excursions included attending a local annual temple festival celebrating the village's nature spirit, a celebration at a local mosque, and the chance to participate in an English corner with local middle and high school students (and a few adults) all interested to learn English. These experiences made us feel more like fellow townspeople than tourists, and left us with many rich and happy memories. We look forward to returning in the future to visit Brian, Jeanee and their great team!

Room Tip: There are many great rooms - I am sure the staff will be happy to advise travelers who have specific...

I've travelled all over China and have never been to a place with the quality of staff that one finds at the Linden Center. This is a small hotel in Xizhou on the outskirts of Dali and one gets in the town a feeling of China that is hard to get anywhere else so close to an airport (normally one would need to drive a day or so or hike into the hills to get the sort of feeling of authentic China one gets in Xizhou). The hotel is clean and has excellent food. The rooms are fine - arranged around an old courtyard and tastefully decorated in old Chinese style.

What makes the property though is the staff - both in quality and quantity - the staff-guest ratio is unheard of even at luxury lodges like the South American Explora properties and this translates into the ability to go on excellent tours and cultural experiences. The property is better set up for cultural experiences than for trekking/adventures but it does cater to individual needs. Among the staff are a significant number of foreign staff, some of which have a lot of experience.

The issue is not whether to visit the Linden Center as part of a trip to China but when and for how long. I stayed for 5 days and felt like I needed to either stay longer or come back. Having said that, as part of a broad tour of China 3-4 days may work well. In terms of seasons, I visited in February and it was very comfortable. I don't like Yunnan in the summer - it's too hot and rainy. I would not recommend visiting in the summer and January-March would work well as the hotel is less full than at other times.

The Linden Center's beautiful old building and impeccably decorated rooms are exactly what most Westerners visiting China for the first time dream about finding. The setting, in a small village near popular Dali Old Town, is idyllic—quiet and beautiful. As an expat living in China, staying at the center was an antidote to my life in the rest of the country, a way of escaping the neon lights and constant noise of China's frenetic cities. I brought my mother here on her first trip to China, and she was completely enchanted, not only by the center but also by the town. The only inconveniences are that the hot water is only available at certain hours of the day and that though there are not other local restaurants, you have to order your dinner at the center a full hour before you want to eat, which is highly unusual and can be difficult if your spending the day out hiking in the mountains or exploring Dali or the surrounding area.
