Completely empty when we were there this is a unique opportunity to go back into another era in this underground tomb in the gobi.

It is small and wonderful

There is not much to a visit to the Wei-Jin Tombs but what there is is interesting. There were very few people there when we visited, which was good as the area inside the tombs is small. One of the more worthwhile parts of the standard Jiayuguan tour that takes in the fort, wall, and beacon platform.

Other reviewers have done a pretty good job of describing the tombs - the depictions of daily life so long ago really are quite something - especially as they spectacular and yet just so...familiar. Short and sweet.

Well worth a trip if you're spending a day or two in Jiaguyan. It's a way out of town but getting a taxi here should be a cinch if you're keen - expect to pay between 80 and 100 yuan.

From here you can ask your taxi to go a bit further out to see the remnants of some old town walls (Yemawan Bao Yizhi) for an additional amount (we paid an additional 60y and might well have been ripped off). The site itself is free, and you're free to just wander around and take some snaps - it's pretty much tucked away in farmland, but rather impressive. Definitely not a 'must do' but we had the time.

The ticket prices are perhaps a little steep as one reviewer noted, but to be honest that's pretty much the case across the board around here. (When you see the facilities and the number of staff employed just to run a relatively small attraction like this, I guess you can kind of see where the cash is going though?)

This is not a big site, neither is it crowded. You sort of have the place for yourself.
The reason to come here is to see hand painted tiles that depict daily life in the region between the second and 4th cent.
AD.
The way to get here is by a cab from the city.

I got to the tombs by paying 80 RMB for a taxi trip. No one else was there when I was. The museum has a nice display of painted tiles that can be photographed, as no photos are allowed in the cave. The painted tiles in each of the cave's three rooms have a different focus. They are simple but amazing. It's a bit out of the city, but it's worth the trip and doesn't take much time.
