Owner description: Modeled after the palace and gardens at Versailles, the gorgeous, purpose-built Museu Paulista da USP (commonly known as the Museu do Ipiranga) occupies the promontory where Brazilian independence from Portugal was peacefully, if loudly, proclaimed by Dom Pedro I in 1822. The landscaped gardens provide a refreshing respite from the surrounding urban chaos, while the ornate museum itself — affiliated with the University of São Paulo — educates visitors in the history of the city and nation via portraiture, antique vehicles, housewares and informational installations. Ticket includes entrance to the nearby Museu de Zoologia (Zoology Museum).

“Stunning gardens”
Reviewed 7 August 2012

The museum is little disappointing as I hope it would be bigger but still worth seeing. I especially loved the main staircase inside, with several large containers with names of rivers and their water. Each had different colour and was surrounded by different statuettes of birds. I loved the gardens very much. Peaceful and beautiful with many palm trees, fountain and parrots.

“No worth a longer trip”
Reviewed 7 July 2012

Considering that it is supposed to be THE museum of Brazilian history, this place is a little disappointing. I think it might be pretty cool if you go in a group with a guide explaining everything, but on your own its hard to connect all the rooms, people and places in there to a stringent view of Brazilian history (which is, by the way, very interesting).
They have several rooms full of things from the colonial times, like one room full of silverware, one full of weapons, one with porcelain and night pots etc.
Explanations are usually in form of sings or posters, but mostly only in Portuguese with a much shorter English version, if at all. Worth to go there when your close anyway, but if your not really into history, speak no Portuguese and have no guide, you wont spent much more then 30 min there. The park is small but very neat and tidy.
Makes sense to combine the trip with an excursion to Liberdade, the Japanese quarter, which is +/- 10 mins by Taxi.

“Wonderful place to visit in Sao Paulo”
Reviewed 15 June 2012

The Museu do Ipiranga is one of the best museums in Sao Paulo, it's all about the independence of Brazil from Portugal and it has a huge colection of arts from the Emperor Peter I and II. The gardens are also very beautiful and worth an afternoon through the meadows.
