Owner description: Housed in a stunning example of eclectic industrial architecture, the Mercado Municipal de São Paulo — nicknamed the Mercadão — has thousands of food items on offer, literally from soup to nuts. Lush tropical and temperate fruits from every season, choice cuts of meats and fish, and hearty prepared foods, such as the renowned and enormous mortadella (bologna) sandwich, complete the market's catalog of wares, all for sale in a boisterous, welcoming atmosphere. The surrounding area can be a bit sketchy, but the sights and flavors more than make up for the journey downtown.

“Pleasant Surprise”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 September 2012

What a great surprise. They even had a Jazz band walking around and playing and they were very good! The food stalls were amazing, especially the fruit stands. One asked us if we wanted to taste some Brazilian fruits, and they proceeded to cut open 4 or 5 fruits, amazing just being hospitable not trying to sell us anything. Also the day we were there they had about 15 stands offering samples of their local sugar cane liqueur.

“Bustling place, fun place to grab lunch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 August 2012

A very bustling place with stands selling various items, fruits, and foods. Upstairs is a foodcourt of sorts with several restaurants selling typical Brazilian lunch fare like pastels and baguettes. Be warned though...this place can be CROWDED and it is not always easy to find a table to sit and eat at!

“A world of scents and colors under a wonderful ancient building”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 August 2012

The Municipal Market in Sao Paulo is "the"place to go to get hard to find seasonings, great selection and variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, olives from all over the world, tender codfish filets and other stuff for cooking enthusiasts... if you are not into cooking, you can still have a great eating experience tasting the famous Mortadela & Cheese sandwich or a codfish tartlet... just make sure you see the size of the serving before ordering.... they really make it big for one normal person to eat.

If you are not into cooking or eating and you like photography.... then you have here another great spot for a dozen of great pictures....

If you plan to drive over, expect some delays finding a parking spot. The surroundings are a complete mess. I recommend you find a parking lot nearby and complete the rest of the way by cab or even walking. There is a subway station that takes you near this attraction... a short walk is required.

“Nice market with nice windows”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 August 2012 via mobile

The market is a good place to go for lunch and have a walk around the different stalls to see the fruits, cheese and meat from brasil. The upper floor is ideal for those who would rather sit for lunch enjoy the atmosphere of the market and see the colourful windows with brasilian scenes. The food is good in any retaurant but on sundays you may have to wait to be seated. Would return even if it was just to walk around.

“What a great food!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 August 2012

Make sure you won't miss that! This is a great place for a quick lunch - have a fresh juice, some olives and tomatoes and some 'bun'.

Watch for the total amount that you need to pay - in my case they added some 20 REALs extra... 2+2=5...

Mercado is closing around 4 PM.
