Hotel 1900
Ranked #46 of 286 Hotels in Rio de Janeiro
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 18 September 2017

When booking this hotel, I gave much consideration to the location (safe, convenient, character) and was not disappointed. It is within easy access of both the Centro and the outlying beaches and seems to be in a safe area populated almost totally by locals, not tourists. I had a twin room and to be honest, was quite glad to be alone because it might have been a bit small for two people. The hotel has a nice turn-of-the-century facade although the interior is modern. Breakfast was very substantial and satisfying and in good weather you can sit outside with it. The staff were not quite up to it when I needed an adaptor for my phone charger but they meant well (and I found an electrical shop round the corner anyway). The nearby Largo do Machado is full of local life with news and flower stalls and people on exercise bikes, with the large N.S. da Gloria at the top end (Mass several times daily). Generally a satisfying stay.

The location is convenient (a short walk from the metro) and the neighborhood is interesting and safe -- that said, if you want a more traditional tourist experience, you're better off staying by the beach in Copacabana or Ipanema.
The rooms at this hotel are small, with little space for luggage. (It makes it even harder that the doors open inwards.) But if you can somehow fit everything in, they're clean, comfortable, and modern.
The front desk staff were helpful, and I liked the breakfast.

Room Tip: first-floor rooms can be loud some nights

The hotel was lovely and modern, WiFi and A/C in the room. The breakfast was very nice with plenty of options. Hugo at reception was extremely helpful with maps, advice on trips to take and where to purchase tickets etc and he had very good English. The hotel is well located and close to metro stations. We had a great time here.

Spent two nights here.
Only good way to get here from the GIG airport is by taxi; we wasted much time and energy trying to figure out a way to make the journey by public transport (esp challenging if you do jot speak Portuguese). Taxi counters at the exit of the terminal building are reliable, while those operating within the departure area before you exit customs are more expensive.
Hotel location is good as it is within walking distance to the metro and the Flamengo beach. There are also lots of eating and shopping places nearby.
The room is, however, very small; challenging for more aged travellers but probably fine for the young. They tend to keep the gate to the hotel entrance locked in the evening, which can be rather inconvenient, esp if you are caught in the rain! The guys at reception can be helpful but at times communicating in English can be a challenge. For example, we were directed to a video store when we asked for a dinner place!

Find the right place to stay in Rio de Janeiro isn't so easy if yu look for security, transportation, beach and shops.
In Catete area yu'll find everything. I found after several trips in Catete the Hôtel 1900, an old building full of history in each room very very confortable !
The staff is nice, very helpfull, speaking english, spanish and probably in a while Sirius language !
I had a confortable and super clean room for R$126,00 including a good breakfast.
The toilet is like the rest of the Hôtel: well planned.
On tuesday the Catete street becomes an open market where travellers can find most of the brazilian products, from fruits and vegetables 'til shoes and what you don't really need !
The hôtel is about 300 m from Flamengo beach and 100 m from Catete underground station.
A lot of shops around and restaurantes like " Catetelandia " 204 Catete street, a self service ( comida a kilo ) offering good food for a good price. From the hotel just catch a bus to get to Corcovado ou Pão de açúcar ! Easy and fast.
