We are a young American couple who just got back from a 12-day trip through parts of Brazil. We tend to travel on a budget (aiming to spend around $70 USD per night), but we spent a more in Rio (around $170 per night), namely because we had heard such ghastly things about other tourists being mugged, etc., and wanted to be sure to stay some place safe.

We heard about the Novo Mundo through a friend whose parents had stayed here and so we decided to book not knowing much else. The pros are
- the hotel is clean and comfortable and the lobby is currently undergoing renovation
- safe location, a block from the Metro in a lively part of town. You do have to walk a block down a relatively quiet street to get to the hotel, but we never felt unsafe due to the neighborhood being fairly affluent. (We felt that this was incredibly important given how often tourists are mugged in Rio.)
- rooms are nice and spacious, some with sweeping views of the Flamengo beach area onto the Sugar Loaf
- safes in all the rooms so you can leave your passport, credit cards, and extra cash knowing it will be there for you when you get back -- don't take anything you won't need for the day.
- breakfast buffet is over the top: all-you-can-eat fresh fruits, pastries, yogurts, cheeses, eggs, meats, juices, etc.
- free wifi, and if you leave your computer at home (which, this being rio, you probably should), they have a computer terminal that you can use for .40 R per minute)
- TV with loads of channels with movies, etc.

cons:
- the area is not the funnest area, and it's a good 20 minute metro ride to get anywhere interesting (Copacabana, Ipanema, the centro)
- there aren't too many restaurants nearby (although the bell hop recommended the good Berbegao restaurant on Catete St, near the metro, which was good). We didn't eat at the hotel restaurant, but it didn't seem that great.
- the clientele are mostly Brazilian business travelers, so the hotel has a more buiness-y feel to it. We were happy to trade charisma for safety, however. We also found that the staff were very nice and tried to be helpful, even when they didn't speak much English.
- at approx $170 per night, it was over our budget.

Overall, we would recommend the Novo Mundo as a very safe, comfortable place to stay. It's also conveniently located to public transport, if not necessary to all of the sites and attractions.

Stayed for two weeks for business and it coincided with Carnival. Initially stayed in Executive suites which had been renovated nicely, were quite comfortable and clean with good views of Flamenco beach, Sugarloaf, and Catete Gardens. Internet access was provided in each room. Gym was pathetic and missed having a pool to swim in. for the last few days we ended up in one of the Penthouse suites. Great views and massive but very, very dated and didn't feel particularly clean. Bit of a 70's porn movie feel to it and the stains to go with it as well.

Easy access to the beach for an afternoon walk, but pretty dead compared to Copacabana.

Breakfasts were great and staff were generally friendly and helpful.

Executive suites are decent, and if you're doing business in this part of Rio it's conveniently located and taxi's are quickly summoned by the concierge.

Not much going on in the area and found we had to cab most nights to neighbouring areas or to Rio city centre.

We went to Rio during the carniva & stayed in this hotel for 1 week. We knew from the begining that it is far away from the beaches, but since rio does not have an extensive public transportation network & it was during the busy time of the carnival, the location of the hotel was a major problem for us when planning our dayout (althougth there is a metro stop 4min walk from the hotel). The room itself was spacious, but was poorly furnished & the bathroom was tiny & the shower didn't function well.
On the positive side, the staff in the hotel is very friendly & helpful and the breakfast was delicious and full of options and there was a free wifi in the reception.
