“A GOOD PLACE TO STAY ----- "No Complaints"”
Reviewed 16 April 2012

Clean and Comfortable. Very well located, just a block away from Copacabana Beach (and about a third of the price of a beachside hotel). Plenty of restaurants etc nearby. Staff helpful and most speak a bit of English. The buffet breakfast is not the best ever but is well okay. There is a roof-top pool - did not swim but enjoyed supurb views over the City.

From the fifth floor upwards rooms have a balcony (we were on the seventh floor with a balcony overlooking the tree-lined street - very enjoyable watching the various activities below us!). I understand that from the twelth floor upwards there are rooms with balconies overlooking the ocean.

To sum up.....If you want to visit Rio, If you want a well located hotel (forgot to mention that it is only a few minutes walk from a metro station), If your buget exceeds the 'backpacker status' but does not reach the 'money-no-object' status, If you would be happy with staying in a good quality TOURIST CLASS HOTEL I would strongly suggest that YOU WILL ENJOY YOUR STAY.

Room Tip: Please read what I have included in my review - suggest you go for fifth floor or above.

This hotel really has a lot going for it. Location for one. On a leafy street one block from Copacabana beach. The building is taller than most others on its block, offering nice views from the higher floors. The top floor has a small pool and fitness center which has excellent views of the beach and the neighborhood. We spent part of our last evening up there just taking it easy.

So now the rooms. Also some good things to say. There are laminate floors which are really nice and seem pretty new. There are also flat-screen TVs that can't be more than two or three years old. Bathrooms are huge and showers are excellent. We had a little balcony that overlooked the street. Noise was not a huge problem.

There are also some negatives about the rooms. Our king bed was in fact two twin beds pushed together. The towels were Motel 6 quality. The AC unit was loud when the compressor was running. The look of the rooms (and the hotel in general) is more 1950 than 2012, but still are pleasant enough.

Payment was requested at the beginning of our three-day stay, which I have not had to do ever in Brazil. Wifi was free, but flaky. It was not working more often than it was. Thank goodness there was someone who had not put any security on his network nearby.

The Siqueira Campos metro stop is only about three blocks away. The neighborhood has a nice little sandwich shop and a boteco on the corner, and a Sunday market in the square next to the hotel. It's a great little part of Copacabana.

To be honest I was dissappointed with this hotel. I invariably stay at a Windsor, but have never stayed at the Palace, with my usual choice being the Excelsior. I booked an "Executive" room which indeed was large, with a big King-size bed. Beyond that I can't find anything really good to say - the big room had one shabby picture on the wall, formica-type flooring, with just one moth-eaten rug, and nothing else - as onbe previous reviewer said it's outdated, and shouldn't be for what they charge. My room had a balcony, with a "partial" swea view, but if you leave the aircon on it is deafening - furthermore the aircon is deafening inside as well.

On the plus side, the hotel is just a few steps from the beach - and if you want to find out what Rio is all about, just spend some time here - even if it's just having a drink at one of the kiosks between the Avda Atlantica and the beach. Football, volleyball, stunning bodies - it's all on display, and best seen on a Sunday when one of the main lanes is closed to pedestrians. There is also a fascinating street market just up the road from the hotel, and the Metro is about 10 mins walk.

One major complaint - no coffee machine! The "luxury" of a minibar by no means compensates. Breakfast was the usual good Windsor standard, but I was paying some £ 135 per night for what is an average 3-star hotel. Brazil, you have to get your act sorted out before the Olympics, World Cup etc, which are suddenly going to inundate you with people who cannot afford the Copacabana Palace, Marriott, Sheraton etc, but who are looking for affordable accommodation, with good levels of service. At present, Rio (Copocabana) has a surfeit of very average 3-star hotels, charging 5-star prices - what will they do come the "big" events?

One final point - look out for transportation when you leave. Black limousines suddenly seem to be called when a airport taxi is requested.....

Room Tip: Watch for rooms attracting the sun and make sure curtains are pulled

I´ll be blunt: the furniture of this hotel is very outdated (in the bedroom and in the common areas). However, is a very good hotel. Regular breakfast. Large rooms. Very well located. The front desk staff is very attentive and helpful. It has a swimming pool, bar and gym on the terrace with a very very beautiful view of Copacabana beach. The hotel is not in front of the beach, but just a few steps. There is metro station close to him (station Siqueira Campos), which facilitates movement through the city. The price is high, like all the other beach hotels in Rio, unfortunately. And this writer is a brazilian.

Room Tip: The higher floors in the front could have a beach view.
