It took me so long to find something decent to spend one night in Rio between one flight and the other. So if you are looking for something like that just book this hotel, it is the closest you can sleep to GIG (intl airport in Rio), it is safe, nice standard, nothing great but honestly strategic for flight connections. It is in front of Santos Dumont airport where a shuttle bus connects to the international airport for something like 10 Reals and if you want to take a taxi you are already in Centro, so you skip the traffic to go out of town and it won't cost you more thna 30/40 Reals.

I enjoyed my stay at the Novotel Rio. The hotel itself seems quite new and the rooms are nice. Nice for Novotels, that is. Pretty basic, no frills, but very clean and all I needed on my business trip. The service here was good, not great. Even compared to the Novotel I stayed at in Cuzco, Peru, where the service was excellent. I had to call to have someone clean my room at 5:00PM one of the days; they couldn't exchange currency, etc. Not huge issues, really, but not things you would typically encounter at a Starwood property, or a Sofitel. I didn't eat at the restaurant as it seemed overpriced, but instead went next door to the Ibis. The Ibis was cheaper, but I really should have spent the extra money and eaten at the Novotel, as the Ibis was marginal at best. Taxis around town are fairly expensive, as is Rio itself. Also while the area of the hotel is decent during the week, the whole downtown area is truly deserted over the weekend. I had never seen anything like it...several square miles basically boarded up except for the hotels. So don't go out wandering at night (or maybe during the day!) over the weekend. Also, watch your stuff down by the beach. I had read the reviews on how much petty crime there is in Rio, so we were careful. Even so, we got bumped into by a pickpocket walking along Copacabana beach. He came up empty handed, but was very smooth. So be careful. Overall, I enjoyed my stay and would go back to this hotel again as long as I was looking for basic, clean, relatively inexpensive accommodation, with a slight modern touch.

Hotel seems quite new. It is good for a business trip in downtown Rio.

If you come for leisure or with family, I would recommend another hotel.

Design is quite modern (constant with the Novotel chain).
Rooms are simple but pretty well designed for work and with laminate hardwood floor. Bathrooms are quite small (except showers).

Food (dinner is average). Meat (Picanha) was disappointing (not tender at all). You are pretty much stuck with their restaurant for dinner because there are no many choices around and people do not walk around downtown at night like in Copacabana or Ipanema for example.

Breakfast, although quite expensive (33$R), was ok.

Some improvements:
- In rooms: there are no "US" plugs except the restroom so this is annoying if you need to work and charge your laptop at the same time.
- If you are on business and need to iron a shirt, there are no iron board and iron per default in the rooms, you have to call (delivery was less than 5mn)
- Because you are in Downtown, you can hear some street noise but you would somewhat expect that. Higher you are, better it is.
- In the bathroom, the exhaust vent is always on even when nobody is in there or lights on. Annoying but ok if you close the doors.
- TV screen is about 32", no access to HDMI and no US news channels like CNN.
- Mattress is very tough and not very comfortable: some improvements needed there.

Conclusion: good simple and practical choice for an overnight business stay for a morning downtown meeting. I would rather stay there as this is an international chain, instead of choosing one of the many independent hotels where you have no idea what you are really getting until you get there.

Room Tip: Ask for high floors

Over all the restaurant was good.
The wine was delicious.
Waitering was fine.
However the chef's suggestion, that we ordered, was sinfull as far as the aspect, in that it was not pleasing to the eye, nor was it very tastefully.
Breakfast was very good.
