“Fantastic hostel with amazing staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 April 2011

The staff at this hostel are so friendly and helpful, nothing was ever a problem. The guys on reception, promotional staff and bar guys all gave us great advice about what to do in Parati.

Our double room was great value compared with others we's stayed in in Brazil, and probably of the highest standard. Both the room and en suite were immacuately clean, and the bed was really comfortable. The shower was huge, you could probably fit about six people in there! I also saw the dorms as my friend stayed in one, and these were clean and spacious, and also with a nice bathroom.

The hostel organise great daytime activities, including a boat trip which if enough people from the hostel want to go, they organise a boat just for them. I also would recommend the waterfall tour- awesome day out!

We were on tight schedule when we arrived and had only booked one night, but were so impressed by Parati and the hostel that we decided to stay another. The guy on reception even rang the hostel we had booked in Rio to tell them we wanted to put our booking back a day. Talk about go out of your way for someone!

The atmosphere is great, and the cute little bar and pool area outside finish this place off.

Room Tip: Go there!

Che Lagarta is situated in a great location; it's a 3 minute walk from the historic center and a 7 minute walk from the bus station. The reception staff and management were very friendly, helpful and spoke several languages fluently. They suggested a great restaurant (we ate there twice!), had free internet/wireless and offered different excursions.

The hostel served suppers/BBQs/drinks for reasonable prices, but the breakfast was very basic and could have been better. We didn't cook or use the kitchen so I can't comment on that, however I was grateful that when the hostel ran out of bottled water late at night I was able to fill my water bottle from their water filter.

The room was clean, with comfortable beds, a bar fridge, and a decent hot shower; although a bathroom extractor fan, a towel bar (or two) and a bathmat would be helpful additions. There were a couple of mosquitoes in the room which can happen, unsurprisingly, since Paraty is surrounded by the beautiful Atlantic Rainforest. Otherwise the room was very good, it was quiet at night and we slept well.

Overall the hostel and our room exceeded my expectations. I've visited Paraty many times before, will go there again and would stay at Che Lagarta again.

2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 November 2010

Even though we booked our private room over a week before arriving, somehow the hostel did not have our correct booking and had no private rooms left. Apparently all reservations for Che Lagarto hostel's worldwide go through their HO and then passed onto the hostel (which received the wrong information for our booking). So we were given a dorm and promised no one else would be in there, but on arrival in the dorm there was someone else already in there! Rather than loose the extra money we paid for a private room they moved the poor person to another dorm. Dorm itself was okay, 3 bunk beds with 2 beds on each. We were promised to move to a private room the next day which they did. Private room good size with "cable tv" and decent sized bathroom. The cable was out so only local channels and shower only had cold water which didn't matter that much. The room was meant to have aircon, but that didn't work either, so the room was horribly hot as it didn't have a fan. Reception staff tried to fix the aircon for a while, but eventually gave us a floor fan to keep us cool. Did the job. Cable tv was also out in the TV common room. Cleanliness seems to be an issue at this hostel as the sheets and pillows in both rooms were dirty and smelt. The pictures of the pool you see on the websites are deceiving, it's extremely small and more the size of a spa. It has no shaded area around it, so was a bit too hot to hang around during the day (didn't see one person in or near it in 3 days). The thing going for this place is the staff, they are extremely friendly and helpful with information on what to do in the area and how to get to other places. They even offered us free dinner on the first night for stuffing us around. The hostel does offer cheap dinners most nights for about 10R and beer is not that expensive there (4 cans for 10R). Word of caution though, if you book on any third party website like we did (hostels.com) the booking comes up in USD and the hostel can use their own conversion rate to Real. The rate they tried to use was 2.1 which is ridiculously high considering the current rate is 1.7. Questioned the manager about this and she advised this is the rate they use and have asked the websites to update their systems. We paid in USD to avoid the problem, but seriously it's way too high and quite greedy. Beware!

As backpackers, the location was close to the bus stop and also to the historic part of the city. It was ideally situated. The reception staff were very helpful and engaging, and gave us great suggestions as to where to eat and where to go. We had a great time in Paraty and I should say the hostel did have a role in that experience.

Friendly, helpful staff in a very good location. We booked an excellent boat trip through the hostel. The hostel, however, could have been cleaner. We just felt the bathrooms and beds etc. weren't as clean as they could have been.
