Owner description: The MM Gerdau - Museu das Minas e do Metal , part of the "Liberty Square Cultural Circuit", was designed to highlight the remarkable relations between the history and the cultural expressions of the State of Minas Gerais, with the wealth of its mines and natural resources, and even to celebrate the identity of the State and its people. The Museum presents a process that translates the formation and the development of a region, revealing two of the main economic activity of Minas Gerais: mining and metallurgy.

A very interesting , well displayed Museum going over the history of Minerals in Mina Gerais greater area and having various displays unfortunately everything in Portuguese language and nothing in English. Also a very nice journey in a lift of going down in to a mine with talk in Portuguese by a Senior respected leader. Photography is not allowed in most displays. Nonetheless very interesting though explanations in English language would give it a wider appeal & audience.

A very quaint Coffee shop with snacks and a nice sitting area on the ground floor with a small souvenir shop worth browsing just next to it.

Overall, a good interactive museum. As with other sites in the area, you need a good command of Portuguese but if you have it you will enjoy the exhibits. Otherwise it will just be a case of looking at beautiful stones and minerals.

About 66% of the displays have captions in Portuguese and English, and all the videos are in Portuguese. I would give this an excellent rating if all the captions were bi-lingual, and if there were an option for English subtitles/language for the videos. The museum does a excellent job of teaching mineralogy as it pertains to this region.

This imposing building in Praça Liberdade houses the local mineralogy museum. While not as impressive as the mineral museum in Ouro Preto it nevertheless gives a great overview of mines and minerals in the state of Minas Gerais. Located on three darkened-for-effect floors, allow about an hour to see the displays and interactive exhibits. There is even a meteorite found n 1965. It's open on Sundays and entry is free.

Nice way to learn about mining in Brazil. The displays of the various minerals were facination. A little more english would have been helpful to us americans. But we were traveling with 2 portugese speakers who could translate for us.
