“Unique Pousada in Carmo”
Reviewed 21 April 2012

Gerusa and Stephane are the delightful owners of the Pousada Casa Vila Bela, a short walk from the main Pelourinho area of Salvador. The area feels safe as there is a tourist police presence. "Yamanja" is their best room with elevated views over the harbor and a large balcony, and breakfast is served on the patio below. Carmo is a small neighborhood filled with locals' quaint houses and small restaurants, cobblestone streets, kids playing in the streets, and old churches. Gerusa and Stephane were unbelievably friendly, informative and wonderfully helpful at all times - I had a problem with my taxi to the airport and Stephane insisted he drive me there, giving up part of Sunday with his family.

I stayed in the room Yemanja with a wonderful view of the bay and the Pelourinho.
Breakfast is served on a really nice terrace also with this view, they serve great juices and tropical delicacies.
For me the highlight were Stephane and Gerusa's recommendations on what to visit and also the clear directions they gave me (I have a hard time with orientation).
Also they always try to call ahead and book for you or find out when things will be happening so you don't waste your time.
I totally recommend to stay at these Pousada!

After a long trip from London we had a bit of culture shock on arrival in Salvador. It took a little bit of coaxing to have a walk around the old city as we expected to be mugged as soon as we ventured out. Fortunately we soon were reassured when we saw other tourists walking about with their cameras on display. The truth is that the real danger is injuring your ankles on the cobbled streets.
The pousada looks small on the outside but quite spacious on the inside. Our bedroom and the breakfast room had a view over the harbour and was nice and quiet.
The owners were very understanding of our aprehension and were able to book us a guide for an afternoon tour of the city.
We enjoyed our stay in Salvador and felt that the "in at the deep end" approach was the right way to do the old city as we were able to walk to all the sights without needing taxis.
The owners speak good English but not the staff so a few words of Portuguese is a help.

Room Tip: The harbour views are very nice

I stayed at the Pousada during my first trip to Brazil with my Brazilian boyfriend. We had gotten engaged the day before and my new Fiance called the Pousada and asked them to make it special to celebrate. We were greeted in our room with strawberries, champagne, pastries, grapes and a lovely tropical flower bouquet! Our room was beautiful with an amazing view of the bay.

The neighborhood can feel a little unsafe at night but I felt safe in the pousada with the security guard who is there. It was comfortable, the breakfast was excellent and the owners were very nice! Jerusha recommended an excellent restaurant for us to try authentic bahian food. The staff was very nice as well.

I would definitely recommend this place!

Room Tip: One with bay view.

Within walking distance ( flat shoes recommended ) of the old town, accomodation was considerably improved by a change of room. We arrived very late and got a horrible room next to the kitchen area ( felt like being in India ) but, after a moan with the manager, moved to the top with a view over rooftops and streets. We could now unpack and get into Salvador, which is an extraordinary place with great food and the full colonial experience. The area is now being renovated and is less threatening ( as is most of Brazil ) and I imagine that in 10 years time, it'll all be boutique and bland. We had a local friend who said she had not been in the area for six years because of it's reputation and insisted on showing us the 'new' Salvador. One gated estate is pretty much the same as any other - we preferred the edgy candomble atmosphere that pervades the Pelourinho.
