The Americana is a 60's vintage motel surrounded by highrises. The rooms are clean and comfortable and each has a refrigerator. A complimentary continental breakfast (juice, fruit, cereal, bagels and cream cheese, doughnuts) is offered. The front desk staff is knowledgeable and helpful. There's a shuttle to and from the airport and to and from nearby shops and restaurants.
A five minute walk will bring you to Crystal City Mall and Metro. In the Mall you'll find numerous shops and both fast food and a variety of sit down restuarants. Fifteen minutes on the Metro will take you anywhere in downtown Washington. There's even a Costco two blocks away.
We spent a week there and have no complaints. It's not fancy but you can't beat the price and the service and location.

We stayed in this hotel for one night because we had an early flight to catch out of Washington National Airport (DCA). The room was inexpensive for a hotel in this area, although we did find a MUCH nicer hotel at the same price on the return trip. The difference was that we had to pay about $22 per night extra for parking at the nicer place and we had to pay for internet access. Neither the parking fee nor the internet access fee was disclosed to us in advance, so if you find a place that appears to be priced competitively with The Americana, be sure to check for these hidden charges.

But back to the subject at hand, the Americana. The generally positive reviews about the hotel are accurate, but it really depends on what you're accustomed to having in regard to accommodations. If you're comfortable staying in a typical Red Roof Inn or Motel 6, you'll probably be comfortable here. The place is old and a bit down at the heels, but the rooms are clean and the beds are okay. In this hotel, you don't get a "key card" for your room door, you get, literally, a metal door key with the room number stamped into the metal of the key. The furnishings are spartan... not a pencil or notepad or any extras... but if you just need a bed to sleep in and a bathroom, the place gets the job done.

Having said that, if you can identify the staff (they dress in casual street clothes, no uniforms or identification that would indicate that they're employees), you'll find that they are helpful, albeit not overly friendly.

The "breakfast" is okay, but it's really just snacks like bagels, donuts, muffins, cereals, and juice. And, of course, most importantly, coffee.

The hotel has no restaurant, but there is a very good restaurant, open to the public, in the hotel next door. Also, there are numerous restaurants in the area if you're willing to walk or drive a bit, but having a decent restaurant next door means you don't have to relinquish your parking space to drive somewhere else for a meal.

And speaking of parking... there's no charge for parking, but the parking is limited and is located at ground level immediately under and around the hotel. On one side of the under-hotel parking, the concrete support beams are so low that only a standard car will clear the support beams. If you have an SUV or anything that is taller than a normal car, you'll have to jockey for a parking spot on the opposite side of the building where the height of the support beams will allow your vehicle to fit under the building.

The hotel is located near the Crystal City Metro stop, so if you're staying for a few days, getting to the major attractions should be relatively easy (the DC Metrorail system is clean and relatively safe... a treat compared to many large city public transportation systems).

All in all, The Americana is nothing fancy, but it is functional and fills the need for cheap, no frills accommodations. If you're on your honeymoon or you're planning a romantic getaway, do NOT book this hotel, but for a practical, no nonsense place to spend a night or two, The Americana will get the job done.

Booked online based on mainly positive review but was cautious a out regularly appearing negative comments. First impression of dated appearance was to be expected as we had seen many foots of this. Asked for renovated room and was very disappointed. Walls had been painted but over peeling wallpaper. Bed was new but bedspread was tattered. I would have been fine by myself but my young daughter literally begged to go elsewhere based on sight along. You know some places just don't feel safe and this was one of those places. We stayed anyway and enjoyed to surroundings and proximity to the metro and places to eat. The staff came across as a bit tired and rude at times when questioned about the facility but you get what you pay for I guess. I enjoyed the throwback atmosphere of places I remembered staying as a kid myself but my daughter did not appreciate this. If traveling with kids this is probably not your best option but to each their own.

Our family of 4 stayed at this hotel last week. We chose the hotel after reading the generally positive reviews. However, let me be clear: this is not a Hampton Inn level hotel. It is an older tired hotel that will do in a pinch. The lower price reflects that. The staff were friendly and helpful and breakfast is fine (assortment of fresh bagels, donuts, muffins, cereals, juice, coffee). It is located about a block and a half to the Crystal City Metro stop. If you can get a name brand hotel at close to the same price, take it. If not, this is one to consider - just keep in mind my description.

We flew into DC and missed our connecting flight. It was spring break, and we needed a place to sleep. The Americana is VERY close to the airport, had a very reasonable rate, which included breakfast. They also provided shuttle service to us to the airport the next morning. However, this is not a fancy hotel. It is quite out of date and not the cleanest or modern by any means. However, in a pinch, it worked out just fine.
