My room smelled funky when I entered but thought it might be because AC wasn't low enough. I left for a few hours AC down to 61 this place smells like wet dog! My nose is congested and the bed sucks! I would never recommend this place Hampton Inn right next door is way much better.

Nicest hotel I've stayed in in a long time. Every thing from check in, the room, to check out was first class. I actually had a bathroom with a shower that was so large that there was a claw foot bathtub in the shower!

This hotel appears to have been redone recently. Everything is clean, well decorated and very appealing. No surprise given the price. The people at the front desk during the day are very helpful and knowledgeable. The people at the front desk at night, don't know a think about their community. Not helpful when your looking for a place to eat. It's nice that at night they have wine and cheese, but it's only for one hour and if you are doing anything during the day it tough to be back at 5. The coffee in the am is only available for one hour too. Really, coffee is cheap and we are on vacation, do we have to be on that tight a schedule.
The area is lovely. It is in walking distance to the Metro, and the waterfront. Everything you could ever want is nearby.
The spa is not top notch. They are very limited on massage therapists and there service is just ok. I wouldn't do it again.

Room Tip: Don't book your room through a 3rd party company because they will not give you your Kimpton member points. Such BS

It pains me to write a negative review of the Lorien, as we are locals and this has always been one of our favorite Alexandria hotels. After our anniversary trip to Charleston got cancelled thanks to Hurricane Matthew, we decided to celebrate with a little staycation at Lorien. We booked a specialty suite for one night and were looking forward to enjoying both the balcony and the claw foot tub. The website clearly says that suites include claw foot tubs. We check in and were surprised to find that our room actually didn't have a tub. In addition, the cushions on the balcony furniture was soaking wet, as it had rained the entire day before. Since we were celebrating a special occasion and had planned on using both amenities, we asked the front desk if there was another suite available that had a tub and dry furniture (or if they had spare, dry cushions).

After an hour and a half of cooling our heels and not being able to get settled, they moved us to a smaller suite on the second floor which didn't have a balcony, but did have a tub (yay!). We were disappointed in losing the balcony, but it wasn't really usable anyway because of the wet furniture (note to the hotel: maybe consider bringing in cushions when the forecast calls for 100% chance of rain). Unfortunately, the room we moved to was right next to the loading dock, so we got quite the wake up at 6:30am when all the delivery and garbage trucks showed up. At this point, the whole trip was turning into a comedy of errors!

This used to be my favorite hotel, but it's really starting to show some age (it opened about 7 years ago) - it could use a refresh. Our first suite had stains on the couch and chair in the living area and in both suites there was a lot of cracked tile in the bathroom. During the wine happy hour (a great Kimpton perk), the manager on duty turned on the gas fireplace. It was a bit windy out and I commented that it might be too windy for a fire. The manager deadpanned "Well, if the hotel catches on fire, I get to go home." Um, yes, I guess that's true, but what a lousy attitude. We were also a little disappointed that the hotel didn't do anything special to help us celebrate our anniversary (Kimpton usually is great with leaving little treats or a bottle of wine in the room); I understanding that these are truly extras, but they're what make a stay special. I expect more from Kimpton properties.

A bright spot of the stay was a fantastic lunch at Brabo Tasting Room - the service was excellent, as was the food (tomato salad, mussels, pizza). We've had dinner before on Brabo and it's excellent as well. The location is also dynamite, right on King Street and a short walk to the Metro.

I really hope this hotel can return to its former glory, as it used to be our staycation go-to and the place we'd send all our visitors. Unfortunately, it missed the mark this time.

We stayed at this hotel for a week. The service was excellent and most of the staff very friendly, especially Frances at the front desk. We had breakfast in the Brabo Tasting Room which was delicious. Dyisha waited on us each morning. She was so friendly and very attentive to our needs. The location was within walking distance of the Metro, which made it very convenient for trips to DC. Rosario, one of the cleaning girls made sure our room was spotless! We enjoyed our entire stay and would definitely recommend this hotel.
