“Subpar Accommodations and Terrible Inn Keepers”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 February 2012

My fiancé and I decided to take a trip a trip up to Vermont for some skiing and relaxation. After checking the web we settled on the Arlington Inn, based on the style of the house and the beautiful photos depicting spacious rooms with large Jacuzzis. The Inn Keepers didn’t get back to our about availability until the morning of our planned departure.

We accepted Liz’s suggestion to take the Old Squires Room. After a 4.5-hour drive we were not pleased to find the room had a terrible smell and could only be described as spacious if you are under 4ft tall. The carpets look like they have not been cleaned since the 70’s and there’s an animal living in the walls. This is meant to be an attic crawl space, not living quarters.

We went to the main house the next morning with the idea of speaking to the owners before the other guests arrived. We explained our issues and were offered a second room in the parsonage only if we agreed to pay $20 more to cover the cleaning costs. We decided to stay put, not because of the $20, but because the second room had other deficiencies that made the packing and unpacking not worthwhile too us.

Breakfast was excellent and the waitresses were nice.

After a day of skiing we headed back to the Inn where they advertised they would be serving coffee and baked goods. There wasn’t any coffee, food, or staff in the public area when we arrived. While looking at some tourist brochures 3 individuals entered the room, including Elizabeth and we presume her husband and mother. We are not sure because nobody introduced themselves or even acknowledged us. We ended up driving 10 miles back into Manchester for a coffee and some baked goods.

Elizabeth checked us out of the room the next morning. She asked about our drive up from Massachusetts but made no mention of how we enjoyed our stay. Typically we’d say something but it was quite obvious that they just don’t care.

Room Tip: Go to the Reluctant Panther instead.

My husband and I honeymooned at the Arlington Inn and decided to return last year for our 5th, because we cannot stop talking about the Inn and all their staff. After a random trip last December and another surprise trip to celebrate my birthday in June we returned this October to celebrate our 6th anniversary. Eric, Elizabeth and all their staff make us feel like we're at the home of a family member. We are always welcomed without hesitation and I have never come across one problem in all this time. Our food is always amazing whether it is breakfast, a picnic lunch or dinner in the restaurant. We stayed in Rebecca's for our honeymoon and very much enjoyed it, but we decided we wanted to splurge a bit last year and chose Victoria's Garden. Since that trip we just can't see staying in any other room. I am being completely sincere when I say there is no other place in the world I would rather stay than the Arlington Inn and I always recommend to everyone.

Room Tip: Haven't seen a poor room at the Inn

We went to dinner here after the big craft fair in Manchester, VT. Which we have done a couple of other years also. This year the entrees were very expensive for the amount of food we received. The service was almost non-existant. We did not get what we asked for and then there was no one insight to get to come back to fix it. Our bill was totally messed up. Near the end of our meal the smell of cigarette smoke was sickening. Guess next year we will definitely be finding someplace new for our group to be going to dinner. We have not stayed at the Inn itself so we can not comment on that experience.

The location of this inn is the first selling point as it sits on the main drag to outlet haven down the street. Great shopping area.
We did not stay in main house which would have been great, the room we had in an adjoining building which was fine. The room was a little smaller than we expected with no extra space. I found the room to be crowded with more furniture than necessary but clean. Our room had a queen bed with a fireplace. The bathroom was a more like a cubbyhole than a bathroom but all things being equal we managed.
The main house is glorious at Christmas and the breakfasts were to die for. The Inn keepers did see to anything we wanted which was nice as it was our anniversary so the flowers were delivered right on time. Overall a nice place to stay, but ask for the main house.

Room Tip: Ask for the main house rooms.

We stayed for two nights and had a package deal that included breakfasts and a dinner. Our room was large, comfortable and clean. Dinner was exceptional and the atmosphere is pleasant. Overall a nice weekend.
