“Short hike - but picturesque”
Review of Cecret Lake Trail

Reviewed 15 June 2016

I took the bus that leaves from the top parking lot of the ski resort. The ride is 5 mins. The bus route is only open in the summer and early fall. It will save you a boring hike to the trailhead. Once you get off the bus, the trailhead is right there. It maybe 1.5 miles, but the altitude is high and at times the trail steep. Once you get to the lake, you will be glad you made the effort to do this trip. One cannot swim in the lake though as this is a watershed (as are all lakes in the Big/Little Cottonwoods).

This is a relatively easy hike with a beautiful lake up top. If you go in the spring it is absolutely stunning with all the wild flowers in bloom!! I can get pretty busy but there is plenty of space to not feel crowded.

The Cecret Lake trail is an easy to moderate hike - not especially long and suitable for all ages (it's the first hike I undertook with my boys when they were little more than toddlers). The trailhead is easily accessible from the Albion Campground parking lot or, for a slightly longer walk, from the parking lot on the summer road oveerlooking Alf's Restaurant. The lake itself, as is common with alpine lakes, is not especially large and the water, provided courtesy melting snow, is bracingly cold (it is posted "no swimming," but I confess that's a rule I've broken in my more reckless past). One thing worth noting - on warm weekend days foot traffic is remarkably dense. Not quite back to back, but close to it. When I'm able to get away, I much prefer a weekday outing. In any event, it's a lovely outing for couples, families and friends. Bring a picnic lunch, find a sunny spot to laze away a bit of time, and thank all that is holy that such splendor is as accessible as the Cecret Lake trail.

We took a fall hike and it was wonderful. The trees are turning and the air crisp. Easy hiking and the trail traveled enough you don't worry about getting lost. Don't think in winter this is hikable, they get 40 feet of snow. I bet spring and summer good too.

Fantastic wildflower display in late July along the trail to the lake. The lake itself is pretty with shaded areas nearby to picnic. The hike is somewhat uphill/steep on the way in which should be a consideration if you are with kids. Parking was competitive even on a weekday morning.
