“Midtown Misnomer”
Reviewed 28 March 2012

Located by the Highland Mall way north of the University of Texas (UT) campus, it is far from being anywhere close to "Midtown". A bus or train ride into town takes 25-35 minutes, depending on the time of day.

The Highland Mall is dying a slow death with entire mall buildings vacated. There is nothing to do nearby - even the few chain restaurants in the area can be a challenge to get to if you don't have a car - the area is bordered by highways and fly-overs.

The Highland Mall Station of the Austin Metro Red-line arrives at the oppsite corner of the huge open lot, a 10 minute walk away. There is no shuttle from the hotel to the Metro sation.

The Austin Metro (www.capmetro.org) runs a decent service and you can plan your trip online - it will offer 1-3 suggestions according to the date and time selected. While the #10 bus will pick you up a short distance away from the hotel, it will not drop you off at the same spot coming back.

The quality of the hotel was OK for a Holiday Inn. Free Wi-Fi in-room was a plus. The "Business Center" is a small open space located by the reception with two PCs for free Internet Access and a printer. One of the PCs was not working for 4 of the 5 days we were there. The second had an anti-malware 'watchdog' that was malfunctioning on the 4th day (could not even get onto safe sites such as Google.com) and the reception staff had no idea what to do to correct the issue.

The bedroom was quite spacious but the bathroom was small - only 1 person can be in it at any one time.

The in-room a/c unit can be somewhat noisy when it kicks in to keep the room at the temperature that you set. The sound is loud enough to wake up a light sleeper.

Summary: Unless you are attending a conference at the hotel itself, there is really no reason to pick this location - there are cheaper motels and lodges nearby.

Room Tip: The area around the hotel is quite deserted so any room will not be affected by outside noise - but...

I chose to come this hotel because they honored the state rate that our university requires. This hotel use to be a Radisson and after much remodeling the hotel is hip and trendy. The exterior needs a touch of love but the interior makes up for everything.

Breakfast is provided and the food is served in a beautiful and professional setting. I would stay at this hotel again as long as they provide great customer service and as long as they honor the state rate.

Room Tip: Highland Mall is nearby for shopping and also other restaurants and movie theatre.

A 2 night stay was very disappointing. Checked in late so ordered room service. It arrived but wasn't very good. A request for a receipt fell on deaf ears. An old dirty sock stayed behind the chair for both days. The bathroom floor was so filthy I had to lay down towels for a rug. Tub showed where last guest put their soap. Restaurant was veey good with wonderful staff. Front desk neglected to call me a cab after requesting it. Business center had no working internet but lovely night manager printed my boarding pass from his computer. Beds very comfy and rooms large and spacious. Attention to cleanig is sorely needed.

The hotel isn't that close to downtown Austin, but its very easy to access. A bit of a random location---not much is around it though. However the happy hour is fantastic at the bar, cheap drinks and appetizers. Priority club members get two free drinks or a free appetizer. Rooms are very comfortable and very clean. The bed is fantastic. Free parking. Nice staff.

My daughter was married in April and we chose this hotel for the guests because it was blocks from her home. I was hesitant because of the outside appearance, but because of reviews we went ahead. What a great remodel they are doing! Our rooms were new, still smelled of fresh carpet and furniture. What a treat! Very modern and trendy. Prices were good, great mattress and bedding. We were not at the hotel very much but the bar looked great and people seemed to be having a good time. They also have a snack area where you can purchase drinks, muffins, etc. Don't let the shell of the place scare you away, it's a good thing!!
