“Great Hotel”
Reviewed 26 April 2012 via mobile

Clean and fresh rooms. Staff is great and the views are great of downtown Austin. Plenty of night life on 6th street. I will be back! Valet parking not bad price for downtown parking.

I stayed in this property at weekend of Apr 13th with a group of friends. Almost 2 weeks past, whenever I look back, I cannot help but feel furious about the whole time we were treated by several employees. First, without any advance notice, we cannot get 2 of the rooms since "it was overbooked", the hotel front desk person just simply said " The hotel is ALWAYS overbooked". Well, that might be true, like in airline, however, the attitude was the worst part of the this first unpleasant encounter. We have a Diamond member with us and so the front desk later promised to secure a room for us, however, a few minutes later, that room was given to another person while checking in at a nearby counter slightly later. The staff just walked away without trying to remedy the situation. The manager, Mr. Mason was nowhere to be found when quite a few customers later cannot get a room. When he finally arrived almost an hour later, he had no satisfactory explanation to us for the poor service. Christy, one of front desk person later offered us complimentary breakfast vouches but didnt fill in any information but just a signature. But after we used one for all 7 of us next morning, a Journey Ambassdor L. Binns tracked us down in the lobby and questioned us in a very interrogatory tone about the legitimacy of the voucher, sounded like we were a bunch of thieves stolen a breakfast (by the way, the breakfast was not good, so dont spend your money to eat there, there are way more options outside in Austin for a good breakfast with services). We explained the situation, she said that why she was asking was for "internal control". I dont think that was the reason at all. Anyway, the worst thing yet to happen, she then asked what is the last name of my friend on the voucher (his last name is Chiu, and we are all Asians, if that ever matters), I cannot believe what came out of her mouth a second later, "Ching, Chong"?, WOW, that was extremely offensive! I still feel furious about that detail. Several of our friends have been trying to report this issue but so far I dont have a satisfactory answer yet. Stay away from this property!!!!!!

Good Morning BenPhoenix01,

We are sorry we were not able to provide you with the quality of services you deserve. While overbooking of rooms does occasionally happen, we pride ourselves on exceptional guest service and do not consider offensive language or comments as a part of delivering such service. This is not typical of our hotel and staff, and we would like to extend a personal apology for your staff encounter. Your satisfaction is very important to us and we try hard to make sure all of our guests have a rewarding stay. Please contact us for further assistance in resolving this matter.

I continue to enjoy the wonderful service this relatively small hotel gives us. We have our board meetings there and they always treat us courteously and respectfully from the front desk, to the restaurant personnel, the bartender (and she keeps very busy with no help), to other staff. The view is not the best (I like to look at water but that's just my preference)but I don't think they will be able to move the hotel anytime soon!!!

This hotel has a great staff and management, but desperately needs an upgrade. Old carpets and furniture give it's age. Seems extra fees for parking, WIFI and other room services are clearly extremely high priced for this hotel's amenities. Staff was helpful and experienced. I rate the restaurants a good but again very pricy. There are excellent restaurants within walking distance.

Room Tip: Higher floors are more quiet. Downtown traffic can be very noisy during morning rush hour.

The service stood out. This was staff like I get at a 5 star hotel.

Drove up to the valet, friendly greeting from the valet, a manager walked out to greet us (nice touch, I only usually get that at 5* hotels), friendly chat with the manager for a moment, then the manager escorted us over to check-in.

Check-in was fast and efficient, and when the check-in person found out it was our anniversary she offered us some free stuff (totally unexpected as we had booked last minute for fairly cheap on Hotwire).

Room was larger than most and quite comfortable. This was not the quietest hotel - our room faced the freeway and the AC unit was a little loud - but it never caused us a problem.

Bar area was quite nice and had a great view of the city. Bartenders were friendly. Not many people up there though even on Saturday night. Hotel is in a good location for evening entertainment - plenty of nightlife around the hotel at 6th and Red River. 6th and Red River is at the rougher/college end of 6th street, to go upmarket you can take a short cab ride over to West 6th st or the Warehouse district or SoCo or Rainey street.

The whole hotel was very clean both in the room and in the public areas.

Some have complained that the valet fee is high at $26 (and the hotel is valet-only). I am used to paying about $20 for parking in downtown hotels in other cities and I can tell you there are a bunch of lots in downtown Austin that will charge you $20 to park there on Friday or Saturday nights. The hotel had friendly valets that had my car ready when I asked with no waiting; the price was a little high but the service was good so it's hard for me to complain about that.

If you are really on a budget then you can try to get street parking around there, but you won't find any on Friday/Saturday evenings unless you are really lucky. There is parking under the freeway but I wouldn't leave my car there. Best to use the valet at the hotel.

Checkout very easy, took 10 seconds.
