I haven't been here... yet. It's on my to do list though. I was thinking this was the Children's Museum when I checked it.

Neat idea with limited focus, but well executed in the restored warehouse.

Abilene is a 2.5 hour drive from Fort Worth. I take my girls there at least two or three times a year. The reason we started making the trip was to see the NCCIL (pronounced, the "Nickel"). The NCCIL puts together traveling exhibits of children's illustrators. For each exhibit, some of the original illustrations of a book are displayed along with a copy of the book itself so you can read it and see what the illustrations look like once making it into the book (and you will be amazed how much more vivid and detailed the originals are). Each illustrator has multiple books and illustrations on display. On Saturdays they have a free art activity tied to the current exhibit. I try to visit each time the exhibit changes. I love it!

This is a small museum, just one room of exhibit space, a gift shop, and a other small rooms. There are not permanent exhibits (at least not when we went) but most of their exhibits also tour the country. If you are interested in children's books at all it is worth a visit. It is really a treat to see originals of the many illustrations that are so familiar from all the books you read as children, and you read to your own children. The admission is free. All in all, it is a great place to spend some time if you are in Abilene.
