“Great Family beach house but a long, hard walk to get to the beach”

This was our first time staying in Avon as we normally stay in South Nags Head. WE found that we could get more home for the money staying a bit farther south in Avon.

First, in rating the home itself, it's fantastic, especially if you have older kids/teenagers. The downstairs game room has a poker table, Foosball, electronic dartboard (which doesn't work), Flat screen TV with home theater receiver and ipod cable plug in, and a Ms. Pac Man/Galaga video game machine.

Every bedroom has a small tube TV with DVD player. Plenty of bathrooms (2 located in bedrooms and 3 others located in hall) and every bathroom has a shower or tub/shower. Bedrooms are well decorated as if rest of house (paintings on walls, beach/lighthouse decor throughout the rest of the house).

Upstairs level has bedroom with bath and another bathroom right next to the kitchen. Upstairs also has a really nice flat screen home theater set up complete with a multi zone audio selector, so you can listen to tv or better yet, plug in your ipod and listen to music in living room or kitchen via in ceiling speakers, or by the pool or hot tub with outdoor speakers). 2nd and 3rd level decks had wooden Adirondack chairs (Although a few more on each level would have been nice knowing the house sleeps 10 and most time you will have more than 4 people sitting outside at same time).

Kitchen is fully equipped. Plus there is a kitchenette located in game room in basement complete with coffee maker, blender and a commercial ice maker.

House was clean and well maintained. Our only maintenance issue was a smoke detector battery going dead in middle of night on last night of our stay and there were no replacement batteries in the house. Also, the house water had a strong odor/taste to it...much worse than any beach house I have stayed in...not a big deal, but bring/buy bottled water/purified water. When we made lemonade with house water, it just didn't taste right.

The 2 big minuses for this house are as follows:

1) Extremely long walk, not only to the beach, but you have to walk over 2 extremely high sets of sand dunes. If my parents were a few years older, they would not have been able to climb them. I am used to oceanfront homes in South Nags Head that have a small (maybe 6 ft high) dune to walk over then you are 50-100 ft from the beach. With this house, there are two 20 foot sand dunes to traverse to get to the beach. There was no way to wheel our cooler to the beach on this visit. The path to the beach next door (approx 30 ft over) did have wooden steps for the first set of dunes but we would have had to walk out the front of the house and backtrack which would have been more work anyway. With us renting a 2 person ocean kayak, it was a chore to carry/drag it over the dunes and to the ocean.

2) With the dunes being that high, even on the top deck, the only part of the ocean we could see was a tiny portion that was at the horizon. The normal oceanfront view I am accustomed to was non-existent. Also, with the dunes being so high, it also blocked a majority of the sound of the ocean (which is another reason we always rent an oceanfront home). If I would have known this, I probably could have rented a semi-oceanfront home in Nags Head that would have had a better view, shorter walk to the beach, and no 20 foot high dunes to climb.

Liked best: The house has everything you need...just bring the food and drinks
Liked least: The strenuous walk over 2 sets of extremely high dunes. With the dunes being 20 feet high, you can barely hear the sound of the ocean & only have a minimal ocean view
