“No good for groups, especially women. Perhaps ok for quiet couple.”
Reviewed 9 October 2012 for a stay in September 2012

We travelled to Turkey for a week's holiday as a group of four women (health professionals aged 28-31) looking for a last bit of summer sunshine and to spend a week by the pool, barbequing, drinking wine and gossiping. This was not the villa for that!

The villa is down a cul-de-sac and appears to have a remote, private garden in all the photos, where we thought we would be unoverlooked and being able to spend lots of time out on the garden in the sunshine.

Whilst the garden is indeed beautiful, with lovely fruit trees, it is very overlooked by surrounding neighbours. The neighbourhood was very quiet, and we were almost the only tourists in town. We appreciate it was the end of the season, but expected a few more tourists due to close proximity to Bodrum. We felt extremely conspicuous as four white women and were the only same sex group when we went out for dinner etc.

On our second night we came home after dinner and were having drinks in the garden and swimming and, I will retrospectively and soberly admit, being far too noisy for the surrounds! However, we weren't expecting that in order to demonstrate that we were being too noisy, without any warning one of the neighbours would throw a glass bottle over the neighbouring wall at us. The bottle hit me on the head and caused an inch long cut to the back of my head with quite lot of bleeding and bruising. Luckily it did not hit me in the face, or knock me out which could have been lethal.

When the villa owner asked the neighbours about the incident her reported back that they said that we were too noisy and we 'deserved it'. Whilst we would totally accept being too noisy, we were incredibly angry that someone had felt that this was the suitable way to deal with it, rather than just asking us to be quieter, which we would have of course done if asked. We were also frustrated that we were unable to have the relaxed, fun holiday together we had imagined and felt unable to go into the garden or use the pool in the evening for fear of upsetting anyone again.

Even prior to this incident we had felt fairly uncomfortable in the area, as we felt that the local people were often unfriendly, did not speak any english at all and did not seem to want tourists in the area. To access the villa you must walk past all of the neighbours houses, and down to a dead end of a lane. We certainly did not feel safe doing so following the incident, particularly given we were warned against contacting the police for fear of retalitation to the villa owner for doing so. These things considered, we did not feel safe enough to continue our holiday in the villa and spent the second half of our holiday in Kos, which is nearby and much more suitable for groups and felt far safer with lots more to do in terms of boat trips, water sports, nightlife etc.

During our stay it was apparant that the villa owner obviously cared a great deal about the property and spends a great deal of time maintaining it. However, he and his gardener pop into the villa most days and we would not recommend this villa to people who want to do their own thing/have privacy. There was no information pack available at the villa as we have previously been given, and although the villa owner gave us some information verbally and drew us a map, we wished we had take a proper guidebook as some of the information he gave us was quite vague and we ended up spending alot of time looking things up on the internet on our phones before heading out.

In terms of the area, local restaurants were good, with large selection of good fish and seafood, but no nightlife at all, and quite a distance from Bodrum. We only spent one afternoon in Bodrum but it again did not appear to have much to do, and we continued to feel fairly unwelcome as tourists. We did go to Gumusluk which was very pretty and we had a nice lunch and a swim there- the bus there was straighforward and the villa is right near the main bus station.

The ferry over to Kos was quick and easy- we bought the tickets at the Marina (approx 10 mins walk from the villa) on the day for the hydrofoil (leaves 9am and 6pm, Mon-Fri, April- October, approx 15 mins) or there is a ferry from exactly the same place that leaves at 9.30am every day (http://www.bodrumferryboat.com/en/calendar.asp) that takes 50 mins.

Unfortunately we would not recommend this villa at all to anyone in similar circumstances to us. Perhaps it would be ok for an older couple who just want a very quiet holiday villa with a pretty garden. Sadly, despite being someone who has travelled extensively alone or with another female friend, if I do ever go back to Turkey it certainly wouldn't be without my husband in tow.

Management Response
31 Oct 2012
This is a joint response to the review posted by these guests from the property owner and booking agents and is based on information supplied by owner and guest.
Both the owner and booking agents were contacted by this guest prior to their review appearing on Trip Advisor and were shocked and upset to learn of the comments, claims and opinions received, also the behaviour of all concerned. The incident was looked into by the villa owner, who questioned neigbours, and private responses were emailed to the guest.

We thank you for your review and are sorry the location of your holiday did not match your expectations. Turgutreis is a quiet uncommercialised, traditional Turkish tourist town on the Bodrum Peninsula ideal for families and couples, late September is almost end of season with few tourists about. For those wishing nightlife, we agree this town and villa should not be selected. The villa is in a quiet residential area where many owners are Turkish, which is the attraction for many guests. For nightlife and a party atmosphere, Bodrum centre and Gumbet offer both. Kos Town in neighbouring Greece also has a vibrant nightlife, which from what has been written, may have matched the group's expectations better.

The villa (and owner) receive excellent reviews. It also attracts a high percentage of repeat guests for those looking for peaceful relaxing holidays in natural surroundings. Negative comments, from guests of all ranges of profile are a rarity which leads us to believe this group did indeed select the wrong location and villa.

Since this property came onto the rental market, seven years ago, 90 sets of guests (families, couples and groups) have stayed. We have never had claims like this before nor heard of anything like it in the area. Turkish locals are extremely friendly and welcoming people, guests must not forget to respect the local culture and beliefs. Ultimately, negative occurrences are almost always brought on by what locals see as behavioural issues.

The English owner, who designed the villa and gardens (specifically with guest requirements in mind), resides at the villa during the winter months. The pool man/gardener (also English) or villa owner attends to the pool and gardens when necessary, as with any other villa with a private pool. Timings of these visits vary and can be adapted to suit guest needs if requested. The grounds of this villa offer a lot of privacy, however, there are neighbouring properties and it is not completely secluded or completely overlooked either. Semi nudity is not encouraged but is possible in certain areas of the garden. This may be perceived as disrespectful by locals as well as late night noise.

We are sad the guests did not have a good experience but their comments have been helpful. In future we'll be mindful to explain to any same sex groups wanting to book this property that the villa and location may not suit those looking for a more livelier holiday. Already, the villa has five 2013 bookings from families/couples (2 of them from repeat guests).
