“Great location, club rooms a must”
Reviewed 9 April 2012

Stayed for 4 nights over the F1 weekend which we went to. On check in was allocated a twin room with no views despite emailing hotel several times to request king bed and views of towers. After seeing this room went straight back to club lounge to complain and after showing all emails was upgraded to a suite. This room was huge. Bathrooms in all rooms do need modernising though. Club lounge is a must as you get breakfast and 2 hours of drinks and nibbles every evening. Hotel is in a very central location with easy access to all the sites. Service was hit and miss. Not 5* but didn't ruin our stay. Would stay here again as very good value for money.

The Istana is very central - about ten minutes walk from Berjaya Times Square, just over the road from the Bukit Bintang train station, and close to lots of bars, restaurants and places to shop.

Staff are very friendly and helpful, although sometimes a little bit disorganised. For example: my wife and I were travelling separately to the hotel, and she arrived 6 hours before I did. She left a message with the concierge to say that I'd be arriving later and to send me up to the room, but when I did arrive (at 1am) the staff on duty had no knowledge of that and called her up to verify my identity (my passport, and the fact that my name was the one on the reservation, were apparently not sufficient). I suppose it's better that than to just let random guests up to the room, but it shows a certain lack of communication amongst the staff.

The lobby area is very nice - lots of water features, subtle lighting and nice decor. It's a shame that this isn't replicated elsewhere; I was astounded at how dirty the carpets were on the levels above the lobby, and our room felt like it had been decorated in the 1980s and left untouched since. The bed was comfortable and we had no problems with noise, but the bathroom felt in need of a refresh, and the television in the bedroom was small, old, and didn't have very many channels - for a hotel that's listed as 4 and half stars, it didn't really have facilities to justify that.

Wi-fi is charged by the hour, even in the lobby. This is such a tired business practice that I'm not going to go on about it here - there's a cheaper internet access at the cafe down the street if you're that bothered.

Breakfast is ok - croissants are very, very good but the rest of the baked offerings weren't anything special, and I would have liked to have seen more variety in fruit. The lifts were a bit random - slow, and would sometimes open to let people get in who wanted to go up when the lift was going down, or vice versa. Not a big deal - perhaps it's just a plan to make people meet one another at unexpected times - but if you were in a hurry I expect this would start to become annoying quite quickly.

One tip - if you're a solitary man walking up to the hotel at night, expect to have lots of professionally friendly women try to get your attention as you're walking along the street. If you don't want this, either make sure your wife is next to you (which seems to stop all but the more persistent women from trying) or go round the back of the hotel, where the street has more restaurants and bars, and less taxi drivers and ladies of the night.

Located close to the KL Monorail, this large Hotel is well located for exploring Kuala Lumpur.
The staff are very friendly, welcoming and helpful; the room was a good size and was clean and tidy.
However, away from the Lobby and Lounge, the hotel is dull and uninspring. The carpets are past their best, one of the 2 wash basins was cracked and the plug didn't work. The bed was hard and uncomortable.
The Hotel is crying out for a refurb, a new coat of paint and some pictures to liven the place up.
The Staff deserve it!
