“Highly enjoyable and unusual experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 January 2010

I stayed for two nights at the Bayan Indah hotel and attended a couple of cooking classes. It was a fantastic and unique experience, and the quality of the spacious kitchen, my room and the service was unbeatable. I always felt very welcome and I tried some of the tastiest food I have ever eaten. Definitely worth a trip, especially if you love food and want something different.

I stayed at Bayan Indah for 2 days to take part in the cookery classes held by the incredibly friendly and talented Rohani Jelani. The accommodation sits on the first floor and has 4 stylishly furnished en suite rooms, with a balcony and lounge area and kitchen area, too. Every day, Rohani put out some freshly baked treats for us, as well as cooking us an Asian or European style breakfast.

The setting of Bayan Indah is amazing; it is surrounded by tropical forests and is far from anything else I've experienced. There are stunning flowers and plants everywhere, as well as a pond sitting in the front garden. The beauty of it is that the kitchen and dining area is completely open at the front of the house, and so these lovely views are never hidden whilst cooking or eating.

I would definitely recommend this guesthouse to any traveller wishing to escape the busy roads of Kuala Lumpur, and of course, to anyone looking to learn some new recipes from one of Malaysia's top chefs!

This place has a Zen-like feel to it - one feels almost like entering a cooking sanctuary and that is not far from the truth because Bayan Indah is also the same place where Rohani Jelani does her fantastic cookery classes. She is the only Malaysian attraction listed in the Saveur Top 100 for the year, and is number 10 on the list, so she must be doing something right.

The rooms are unusual, cool, elegant and designed and decorated completely by Rohani herself as is the whole little complex. Bayan Indah was voted as Malaysia's House of the Year 2008 by local architects and one cannot help but be impressed by the clever use of space on a very difficult steep terrain. The place backs onto pristine tropical forests and one can often see wild squirrels and monkeys playing along the walls. The tropical birds also congregate to greet you in the mornings. I hsve never stayed at a place like this before - it has a lot of creature comforts, it is clean and the staff are very friendly but one feels more like one is staying at a good friend's house than a guest house. For example, there are free drinks, home laundry facilities and also always fresh cookies and cakes available all the time (baked in the kitchen below). Breakfast is made the way you want it so one can choose a local or a Western-style start to the day and it is always done really fresh, direct from the kitchen, and also really delicious. (I opted for the Malaysian breakfast of nasi lemak and curry.)

Talking of the kitchen, this is the place where residents and external visitors do their cooking classes. To put it simply, it is a stunning kitchen - elegant, open, airy, surrounded by green nature, which include some of the herbs we used in our dishes. There are literally scores of cooking themes to choose from and one surprise is that most of the students I encountered are Malaysians. They told me that they want to learn how to cook local food properly and the best teacher in the country is Rohani. Having attended a couple of her courses by now, I can only totally agree. A couple of students were foreigners who had flown in specially to attend a class. The best part of every cooking class is also at the end, when all of us sit down and have a (delicious) meal of the dishes that we had cooked. I met a friend this way who introduced me to several hidden gems of restaurants in Kuala Lumpur which I would never have discovered by myself.

The downside to staying at Bayan Indah is that it is in a truly rural location. Even though it is only 30 mins by taxi from the centre of Kuala Lumpur, it feels like it is half a century away in time and there are even no proper maps for the local roads. As Rohani told me herself jokingly, the location deters casual people who are not really interested in food or cooking or the peace at Bayan Indah. So please note that this is not a place for people looking for urban things to do but rather it is a unique slice of Malaysian life that few will ever encounter.
