“Nice staff - awful hostel.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 December 2011

Booked a private double, arrived late and found it not to be the best area of KL but there was a monorail station nearby so not the end of the world but the area immediately outside the hostel was not great to say the least.
The hostel itself did have internet and the usual hostel facilities expected and the member of staff who greeted us was cool and helpful. The problem was with the room, just the worse ever due to an overwhelming stench of mould. It was apparent that the a/c unit was leaking and without any windows the smell of mould was very bad which was a shame as the room wasn’t actually too bad with a big comfy bed and en suite facilities but seriously, the smell was bad and the walls covered in mould! Additionally, with walls so thing you can hear people snoring through, noise from people coming and going and coming in drunk after 4am meant a good night’s sleep was impossible. Complained to the day staff but was told they were full and as we only had one more night and on a limited budget, chose to tolerate it. There has to be better options than this though in KL.

Nice rooms with ensuite and aircon, no windows in our room though. The staff were quite unfriendly, though the cat Mr Jinga is the cutest. The area is bad a bit scary and there are no bars so I wouldn't recommend staying there for a party, or if you're alone. it's a bit far out of the main city, chinatown is a much better option.

The main reason my husband and I chose this hotel was for the cheap price and wifi. If that's what you want then this place is okay, especially if you just need a place to crash. It feels a little grimy inside. The showers also do not produce hot water. I would like to recommend that you bring your shoes inside the lobby of the hostel or take them with you because my husband left them outside of the hostel near the elevator with other shoes and his and another couples shoes were stolen.

The entrance to the hotel is a little off-putting, but once you take the lift to the hostel on the 4th floor it doesn't matter. The owner (Mohammed, from memory) is exceptionally friendly and really does go out of his way to help. I had to arrange a 2.30 wake up call and airport transfer and he spent time to work out the best and most affordable way to get there. He even promised to wake me up if I overslept. The hostel has everything you need: free desktops and wifi, free breakfast, extremely helpful travel info and even the non-air con rooms had several fans and were extremely comfortable. When I left Mohammed was busy installing a curtain in the dorm to give people a little more privacy. There seems to be a real commitment to looking after guests, which is great. It's not a party place, so if you want to get blind drunk night after night this won't be for you. But if you're looking for a warm welcome and helpful staff in a reasonably central KL location, this is the place.

The staff here is ambivalent at best, but the worst thing about this hostel are the bed bugs on the 4th floor. On the third floor there is no hot water in the private rooms, although they advertise en-suite bathrooms with hot water. When I asked to have it fixed, neither of the 2 desk staff would assist (one said to use the shared bathrooms, the other said it's a known problem). The windowless rooms are not that clean (as evidenced by bed bugs), but you can also see dirt/grease on the walls. There is no refrigerator for guest use. The common area is quite small for a place with this many beds. Also, the wifi is unreliable and constantly goes up and down. It's close to the Chow Kit monorail station, but the monorail is not as useful as the LRT. To be fair, I didn’t think the Chow Kit area is as dangerous as others suggest. To get to the monorail from KL Sentral you need to walk a confusing 10 minute journey downstairs and outside around the next block and across 2 streets. The nearest LRT stop PWTC and is a 10 minute walk from the hostel. It's cheaper to book via AsiaRooms.com than directly, but while there go ahead and find a different place to stay.

Room Tip: Bed bugs on the 4th floor, 3rd floor is newer but has no hot water in private rooms
