I have stayed in a few Westin around the globe and this one needs some TLC. I always have an image of superior quality, but was let down here. No WiFi in the rooms and the business centre was not accessible all hours.

The rooms were clean and OK, but looking old and tired.

Warning.... we ate at the Teppanyaki restaurant in the hotel and got fleeced for a bill of over $500 and walked away hungry.

Room Tip: Choose another hotel

Room was large and bright. Fantastic buffet breakfast was included in our room (but maybe not all). Free swimming pool which was unusual in Japan. Free shuttle ever 30 minutes to the Kyoto subway station, with 2 other stops at shopping areas. Great location for walks.

I stayed here for a conference and the experience was not too bad.

This is a hotel with history so the rooms are pretty small and the renovation is needed. If you fancy modern hotels, Granvia is a better choice. This Westin does not have the signature “Heavenly Bed” or comfortable pillows. However, the service is pretty okay (especially the front desk staff who are very attentive and speak great English). But to be honest, service in Japan is rarely a problem.

The location is quite good. It’s very comfortable to walk to Kamogawa (restaurant and bar areas alongside Kamo River) and to Gion (shopping and restaurant streets) and it only took about 15 to 20 minutes.

There are also a couple of restaurants and convenience stores on the same street of the hotel. If you do not want to dine in the hotel, 500 Yen (USD 6.5) can get you a decent bowl of noodles at a noddle shop next to the hotel. For those who don’t speak any Japanese, most of the dining places prepare menus in English so it’s not a problem at all.

Room Tip: Rooms in the back are quieter.

I stayed at the Westin in Kyoto for 5 nights and I was quite disappointed. I was not impressed with the hotel's staff. The found that the people in the hotel were less friendly than most other people that I encountered during my 2 week vacation in Japan. The front desk staff when I checked in was not very friendly or welcoming. The concierge was not very helpful and the rooms were small, stuffy and really not all that great.

The hotel's restaurant prices were ridiculously high and they didn't even have wifi in the rooms (not even for a fee)!

It was right next to a subway station and within talking distance of many good sights, but if would definitely stay in a different hotel.

I have stayed at SPG properties and Westin properties all over the world, and was quite disappointed at this particular property. It wasn't OK overall (hence the 3 star grading), but nothing to write home about.

I would urge the Westin Kyoto property to look up to for advice from Westin properties in Auckland, NZ and Portland, OR for advice on how to improve.

We enjoyed staying at this hotel, mainly for its location. It is very close to many of the most beautiful temples and gardens and with views to the hills above Kyoto on one side and across the city to the other. Whilst dining in the hotel is expensive there are some very pleasant local restaurants nearby. The drinking at the hotel is also expensive - it is seductively comfortable and surprisingly empty (a surprise that is until you get the cover charge at the end!)
Breakfast is the best value - whilst expensive, even by hotel standards, it is so comprehensive you can eat for the whole day! Staff were very friendly, room was clean and although its quite old fashioned it has all one needs for a comfortable stay.

Room Tip: I think this depends on what you pay. We were upgraded to one with a view over the city even though we had bought a cheap deal. It was very nice of them and made the stay really good.
