We made a reservation for four and were shown immediately to our table in a private cubicle like booth. Western style seating. The restaurant was fairly empty. Service was very efficient but the meal was well paced. The portions were generous and the food tasty, but it was a meal not an experience. Prices are high but they all are in this area.

Went there on the recommendation of the Ritz Carlton hotel only to find very poor service and very overpriced teppanyaki. Having eaten at many Teppanyaki restaurants, this has to be the poorest value for money we have experienced. Meanest accompaniments I have ever seen. Cold rice and small meat portions. Not recommended.

Great place to come to get a taste of first class Wagyu beef, and the Japanese grilling style (with individual grills by each table/seat) in a very tasteful, accommodating and friendly environment. The average meal (complete multi-course of 5 types of beef, plus soup, rice, salad, dessert) was 6000. I think the lesser one, which is still generous was 4500. For the amount of food and the quality of the beef, this was more than reasonable, especially compared to other meals in Japan. I'm not sure what the other commenters who complained about the price were expecting -- this would be the equivalent to going to a nice steakhouse, and ordering with full accoutrements, not going to your local Outback. Though they obviously cater primarily to Japanese customers, they were happy to help us through the process, and to provide menus in English.

We went to Izutsuya without a reservation and asked if they had a table, we had to wait about 20 minutes but were given tea and the menue to decide beforehand, and we were just really glad to get seats at all as we had asked in 3 places before and were told it would take at least 1 hour! We got the Yakiniku, and it was the best Yakiniku I have ever had! The meat was delicious, just biting into it alone could have been enough! We got so many dishes and ate our fill that we were actually glad when our waiter took all our dishes as we had completely no idea anymore if there was even more meat to come! We were just so immersed in our food!
The service itself was top-notch, we weren't sure how to grill the meat so we asked our waiter and he basically grilled half of our meal himself!
Just. 12/10. Would definitely go again. Perfect ending to an amazing Kyoto trip!

Unlike other reviews here, I'm not going to gripe about the price. 1) We knew when we made a reservation that this place was expensive and 2) It wasn't actually as expensive as some of these reviews would lead you to believe. We had the most expensive set menus (2 of us) a couple of drinks each, and a seafood platter starter to boot (yes, we ate too much). We spent about $240. I give this an average simply because we had better at a similar restaurant. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but while I was happy with this meal, I was not "wow'd". Service, of course, as with so much of Japan, was wonderful. No complaints there. For some reason I just wasn't that excited about the food.
