Owner description: The most famous neighborhood in Kyoto is also known as the Geisha district. It is here, among the teahouses and private clubs that you can catch a glimpse of a geisha in full dress including white makeup.

The area is lovely and charming, with traditional Japanese buildings, cute and narrow alleys and resident geiko and maiko. Unfortunately excessive tourism is spoiling it for everyone

Difficult to find a parking, but once you start to walk you enter an old Japan. Nice street a lots of ladies in rental kimono. I couldn’t believe how many kimonos I saw the various colors and the obies and the shapes of the bows on the back! A display of colors. The buildings and streets were out of time. And we spotted a real Geisha!

Wowww!! An amazing town to visit, where you can find some traditional food or old town. The fact is, if you re the first time here. Must come!!

After many visits to Kyoto we were awfully surprised by the overcrowded streets and alleys of Gion this time.
It seems to collapse under thousands of tourists. Behaviour of tourists has worsened so people keep on barging and pushing...seems to be the opposite of what one would expect in a typical Japanese surrounding.

Gion is the old part of Kyoto and very picturesque indeed in spite of the many tourists/travellers. Therer are lots of little alley ways and small shops where one can browse and often they are frequented by Japanese, such as the small specialsit shop only selling purses and clutches and bags of all shapes and sizes. id one is fortunate one might espy a Geisha or Maiko ( apprentice Geisha) The Kitano Tenmangu shrine in Gion is popular with school children and students who come here to pray for good exam results. For this reason there are many statues of cows dotted around the shrine grounds which are regarded as being exceptionally wise animals. All in all it is well worth allowing oneself a few hours to soak up the atmosphere here
